Speaking of the Lions GM and the topic of the thread, I for the life of me can't figure out why the Lions wouldn't give their second first rounder for Cassell and draft a Tackle with the top pick... They then still would have pick 33 also...
I can't believe they're rallying around Culpepper in Detroit...
Perhaps they are in love with Stafford, but going franchise OT and Cassell would seem to be a far more sound direction than Stafford and who knows who in the first...
Good point, but then again it will still only be a three team race is the north for at least another three years. So thats always good.
The Cassel trade has big draft day implications, possibly for the Packers. With KC out of the market for a 1st round QB, it is very possible that either Sanchez or Stafford will still be available when the Packers pick. This opens up the possibility of someone wanting to trade up into the #9 spot, ahead of SF to take a QB. With the Packers defense in search of linemen and outside linebackers, I wouldn't mind picking up an extra 2nd round pick.

Good point. A trade down. Hmm. been a while since that happened, eh?
So here's something to think about. When Cassel signs his huge extension for many millions of dollars, how exactly should he repay Bernard Pollard without whom Matt Cassel would considerably poorer?
Here's one odd thing: from all the Denver/Detroi/Tampa rumors, it sounds sure like NE could've played these teams off one another and got a lot more than a high second for Cassell. Already, from Denver's early moves, they look like a trainwreck and it's not inconceivable that a whole lot more than that second coulda been garnered.
The fact that Belichik didn't do that lends credence to the notion that he was doing Pioli a favor over in KC.
If I were NE's owner, I don't know that I'd like that.

It has been reported in several venues that NE did not want a high first because of the cost associated with it. They were fine with a much less expensive, but very high second round pick that will still bring a good player. It could make some salary cap sense.
This trade and the aborted Denver trading of Cutler could have unbelievable ramifications for next season. There is no off-season this year, it's all action all the time.
Cutler is highly pissed about the new Denver regime trying to get rid of his ass and rumblings are coming out the mountains that he wants gone from Denver.
Also making noise? Cutler's agent, Bus cook! Another wild off-season for the fat guy.
