Dani Dennis Sutton - Edge - Penn St.

    Overview

Dennis-Sutton is a base defensive end with toughness. He’s effective against the run, but he has limited pass-rushing upside. His predictable, linear rush lacks the burst and bend to beat tackles to the top of the rush and flatten into the pocket. He uses hand violence and brute force to challenge tackles with weak anchors. He’ll get bounced around because his pad level is too high, but he’s tough to finish and finds his way to the action when it’s near him. Dennis-Sutton is equipped to muddy running lanes but might not make many impact plays. He has average upside as an odd- or even-front end.

    Strengths

Heavy hands jolt tackles and create space to operate in both phases.
    • Uses up-and-over arm action to clear the inside edge.
    • Smooth inside spin opens rush-lane opportunities.
    • Can slide laterally with zone blocks and redirect through them against cutbacks.
    • Displays powerful pull-and-shed technique at the point.
    • Takes on heavy contact but stays in the fight.
    Weaknesses
    • Plodding upfield rush lands down the middle of the tackle.
    • Limited bend to flatten and shrink the pocket.
    • Slow to counter when rush stalls at the top.
    • Plays with elevated pad level throughout the rep.
    • Lacks tackle range and can be wiggled into misses by runners.
    • Needs discipline to cut down roughing penalties.

Sutton was ranked 72 on the consensus big board. A steal!

        Rob Demovsky:

Round 4, No. 120 overall: Dani Dennis-Sutton, DE, Iowa

My take: Micah Parsons should be happy that the Packers took a fellow Penn State pass rusher, and Dennis-Sutton almost certainly will need to get on the field right away with Parsons expected to miss the first few weeks of the season while he continues his ACL recovery. The Packers also lost a pair of edge rushers this offseason when they traded Rashan Gary to the Cowboys and lost Kingsley Enagbare in free agency to the Jets. Packers director of pro personnel John Wojciechowski said Dennis-Sutton could help immediately as a pass rusher, saying "He can chase 'em down and he's got the length and the height to get into the passing lanes." He also could provide much-needed special teams help considering he blocked three punts last season.

Ha..I got one right! Love the pick, even though he's a PSU player. 4th round! Great value! With Micah Parsons in his ear, he'll be fine.

Once he gets his first fine on roughing the passer, that'll stop.

DDS is a man among boys in his highlights with a relentless energy that looks eerily familiar.

This could be an amazing pick.

Bizarre imo that he fell. He's like number 7 all time in RAS. I only glanced at his highlights. I will look again. As Gute said, he had "really, really" good production (unlike our two recent first round DEs); I noticed the same. I listened to his interviews a tad and no red flags. I have NO idea why he fell so far. Also, he had like 3 different DCs, I believe, and Penn State is notorious for not developing players. Funny, that he's called a "high floor, low celing" type, when his athleticism indicates he has a very very high ceiling. I suspect he's not twitchy but he tests well at the drills. Still, it's unfathomable that he was there. WIth a 4th rounder, you just want a solid rotational guy. He has a lot more potential. very weird, absolute steal -- I just can't see it any other way.

I'm with you. Between his highlight reels and the RAS comparison PB posted, I am more excited about this pick than any of the others.

Another interesting measurable comparison is CMIII. DDS was comparable to CMIII in the vertical, broad and 10 yards split despite being 15 pounds heavier than CMIII's combine weight. Will be interesting to see if Packers can improve his technique to take advantage of his athleticism.

Clay Matthews was drafted by Packers with pick 26 in round 1 in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Southern California. This player was selected to at least one pro bowl in his career. This player put up 12…

Looking a bit more into him, I think 4th round is about right. Good replacement for Enagbare. He seems to lack top end power, plays high, can't turn the corner. He's a Penn State alumnus; he's definitely got that Penn State vibe in him. Still a good spot and should be able to rotate by year two. Anything more is bonus. He may never elevate above his floor despite the high RAS; that's why he dropped. Nevertheless, you do see some of the athleticism on the field.

If he had CMIII's bend he'd be a superstar.

But he doesn't apparently, so he won't. But maybe he can be Kingsley Enagbare-plus.

Demovsky must be trying to fit in at ESPN since he can't get his college correct ? haha
