  • Guter's Pooters

When I was a kid growing up on the east side of Detroit, a "poot" was a wet fart.

So this thread is dedicated to Guter's wet farts - the picks or the free agent signings that have left you feeling like there's a mess in your pants. You thought it would be a harmless fart but it turned out that it made a gooey mess.

All GM's have these, but I wanted to have some fun with Guter's poorer decisions. I'll start with the draft and let you guys take over on the free agent signings that might qualify. I'm also not going to include guys drafted fourth round or later - by the fourth round you have to have lower expectations for success. Gutes and other GM's take flyers on athletes who don't develop, or football maniacs who lack athletic skills. So calling one of them a "Poot" isn't really fair.

Still, there's lots of wet farts from which to choose. Such as:

2018 - Guter's first year. Oren Burks, third round, and Josh Jackson, second round. Burks at least carved out a career as a special teams player, but drafting a guy in the third round to end up a special teamer - not so great. And Josh Jackson, a second-rounder, was a loud, wet, liquid poot.

2019 - Darnell Savage, first round. Oh, and Guter gave up two fourth rounders to move up to take this guy. That's like putting on your best underwear and confidently tooting into them, thinking it's just an ol' SBD, only to realize you're going to have to throw that pair of undies out.

2020 - Josiah Deguara, third round. The Amish-sounding guy who played like it was the early 1900's.

2021 - Amari Rodgers, third round. Guter keeps the third round splatter farts going with this pick.

2022 - I don't think Guter had a pooter here. You might not love Quay Walker or Sean Rhyan, but they played and started and got second contracts.

2023 - Luke Musgrave, second round. Sure, he made up for it in the third with Tucker Kraft, but Musgrave has been a real letdown - that exact feeling you get when you let one fly and realize, uh oh, that was not a fart.

2024 - Ty'ron Hopper. Oren Burks 2.0, it seems. Couldn't win a starting linebacker job - they even traded to get a linebacker to replace Quay Walker, since this third round pick never has developed into anything more than a ST guy. Now, will Marshawn Lloyd stay on this list? So far, he's been that mustard-yellow stain that you hope will wash out of your undies. But he hasn't produced a thing in two seasons. Still, can you include a guy as a bust who just can't stay on the field due to injury? We've been debating that for years.

Okay, add to, argue with, include some FA signings. Toot away.

MarShawn Loyd might just take the cake.

“Plagued by persistent hamstring, groin, and ankle injuries, Lloyd barely saw the field in his first two seasons, making him a severe return-on-investment miss.”

Oren Burks had some starts for the Bengals last year. He also started for the 49ers and Eagles. Not quite above the median expectation for a 3rd rounder, not a bust, but perhaps a poot.

Apropos, his starts in a season are usually in the single digits, suggestion he's not atop the depth chart.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

I debated including Burks on the list. I think I put him there because Guter drafted him due to superior athletic talent. He had the tools and the Packers took him, hoping they could harness that athelticism. He never developed, really, though. Not even to Nick Barnett level.

I didn't include the most recent drafts because it's too soon to say. I think Jordan Morgan's going to be a very good left tackle, myself. The one that has potential "poot" spattered on him is Anthony Belton. But it's only his second year.

I never liked the Hopper pick. Thought he was the kind of guy you draft in rounds 5-6, not 3. Still early, but so far he is what I thought he was.

Players taken after Darnell Savage: Andre Dillard, Tytus Howard, Josh Jacobs, Marquise Brown, Montez Sweat and Johnathan Abrams. Savage was the first safety taken, Abrams (who flamed out and had a cup of coffee with GB) the 2nd.
Gute woulda been better either trading down or keeping his picks and taking Deebo.

            Woulda shoulda coulda.

If you actually look at the players taken after Gute's picks, most of the time they are duds. Only occasionally is there one (like McLaurin instead of Sternberger) that really gets you.

Every year there's a headscratcher pick too. This year might have been the first in a while where that didn't happen for me.

He played lights out for almost 2 years and disappeared for the rest. My suspicion was that he was not a fan of playing while banged up and would disappear. But that's just complete speculation.

La Fleur has had a weird time getting his gadget guys to work out (Deguera, Savion).

I am still flat stunned that Musgrave has had this much trouble after his rookie year. A lacerated kidney must reset your priorities.

Yeah, he went from allowing passer ratings of 71.1 and 67.3 his first 2 years to 117.4 and 8 TD's in 2021. Never really got it back together after that.

No arguing the list you put together, but there is also no disputing that the Packers have been an exceptionally good team throughout Gutenkunst's time as GM and they continue to be ........ or are some negativist fools gonna whine and dispute that.

There must be a helluva lot of good to go along with that bad - or have we just gotten lucky?
What could be more GOOD and NORMAL and AMERICAN than Packer Football?

37-30 in the last 4 years doesn't qualify as exceptionally good. Its an average slightly better than 9-8 (9.25-7.5). That is one year of Rodgers and 3 of Love.

                          This is interesting.

                          It’s a mediocre league now.
Even look at Lafleur’s record in GB…in his first 3 seasons which were 2019, 2020 and 2021 he went 39-10, after that he’s been average with a record of 37-30-1.

I think switching from Pettine to Barry happened.
Smarter people than me claim Savage wasn't a great fit for Barry's D, and who knows what the coaching did to him. Entirely possible he was the kind of player who couldn't perform well when hurt, but I'd guess his role and effectiveness were impacted by the DC switch.
He was considered talented and very fast but undersized coming out of Maryland, it's interesting how he's barely hanging onto a roster spot. The development curve went flat on him fast.

49-33 over his tenure with obvious injury or other luck related reasons for the mediocre years, and still the negative ninnies whine.

I'll take that over some other damn GM who maybe has a feast or famine or tear-down-to-rebuild or other type of stupid mentality.
