Packers Looking At Duke Basketball Player
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 13, 2009, 8:12 p.m. EDT

The Green Bay Packers have worked out Duke University basketball player Greg Paulus, according to a league source.

Paulus is a former high school Gatorade Football Player of the Year selection who was offered football scholarships to Notre Dame and the University of Miami, but chose to play basketball at Duke.

Paulus was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils at point guard who was once named second-team All-ACC. He was a third-team Academic All-American selection.

A four-time all-state football player in New York, Paulus is listed at 6′1,” 180 pounds on the Duke basketball roster.

Paulus set six New York state passing records, including career passing yards (11,763). He threw 152 touchdown passes in 45 career games, leading his high school to a 42-3 record with him under center.

Paulus was the starting quarterback in the U.S. Army All-American game, also garnering All-American football honors from Parade Magazine.

We look at one of these basketball guys every year, and never draft him.

It would be a real stretch to draft a QB who never played a down of football in college.

Given his size, maybe the Packers might consider playing him at DB.

a new twist in this story..........

The Green Bay Packers aren't the only ones who are interested in Greg Paulus.

According to sources close to the situation, the former Duke point guard was in Ann Arbor on Tuesday meeting with Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez about the possibility of playing this season for the Wolverines.

The 6-foot-1 Paulus, who was the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a standout quarterback at Christian Brothers Academy in New York, has one year of eligibility left for football after playing four years of basketball at Duke.

He watched Michigan practice Tuesday afternoon and could fit in with Rodriguez's spread offense. The Wolverines don't have a clear-cut starting quarterback, and Paulus could come in and play immediately.

Two Michigan freshmen, Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson, will likely compete with Nick Sheridan for the starting spot. Sheridan, however, has a small fracture in his lower right leg. Rodriguez said that Sheridan's injury won't require surgery, but he should be out two to three more weeks.

Sources also told FOXSports.com that Paulus, who worked out last Thursday for the Packers in Durham, N.C., has been contacted by a half-dozen NFL teams and several other college programs.
Paulus, 22, started three seasons for Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski but came off the bench this season. Coming out of high school, he was recruited by numerous big-time football programs, and schools such as Notre Dame would have allowed him to play both sports.

Paulus, however, has not played football since graduating high school, when he threw for 11,763 yards and 152 touchdowns in 45 career games and led CBA to a 42-3 record in four seasons. His younger brother, Mike, is a reserve quarterback at North Carolina.

Paulus, according to one source, is still exploring the possibility of continuing his basketball career but was caught off-guard when a Packers scout contacted him a couple weeks ago after the Blue Devils' season ended with a loss to Villanova in the Sweet 16.

You can't really draft the guy with a 7 can you? I mean... he seems like the free agent type but do you take a flyer? Lurker's saying no ?

You could draft him with a 7th, but there's somebody you'd probably rather get with a 7th round pick. I just don't see there being any chance in hell that he'd make the roster, so spending any pick on him is kind of foolish.

Greg Paulus is going to turn out to be an amazing player in the NFL. And just to prove this, I am book marking this topic.

Well just for shits let me say I agree with you then.

I only asked because, like lurk said, there's no way in hell he's going to beat out Brohm or Flynn. That's the logic at least. Don't really know much about the guy aside from him being a HS God.

Who would have thought there'd ever be a football player that may have to make a decision between the Green Bay Packers and the Michigan Wolverines.

                        I know, Lurk.

I never heard of this mfer Friday. Now there are articles about him being the QB of the Pack or a WR for Michigan.

What next for this boy, the space program or the Senate?

I'm surprised Michigan would be interested...especially since he's only got one year of eligibility? They must really not have confidence in their young guys if they want to bring in a one year stop gap.

You'd think they'd rather pick one of them, and build some continuity, but I guess colleges deal with guys who only start 2 years and bolt to the NFL now anyways.

Going to Michigan this year could be much more beneficial for him. If he starts at Michigan he'll get more exposure than he would as a 3rd string or practice squad member of an NFL team. And if he plays well given that exposure, perhaps there's more money on the table for him afterwards. If I were in his situation, I might just decide to play a year at Michigan myself. Nothing to lose.

Michigan just had the worst season in their history as a football program, they have very little in the cupboard, they're teetering on losing their national relevance, and their coach is under a ton of pressure from the fans in the second year of his contract. No level of "desperation move" on their part would really surprise me at this point.
