  • 2005 Draft and the NFC North

That 2005 draft was a colossal bust for most in the NFC North. There were a combined 30 players taken by the Vikings, Bears, Lions and Packers. Only three remain on the roster of the team that originally selected them; all three -- quarterback Aaron Rodgers (first round), safety Nick Collins (second) and linebacker Brady Poppinga (fourth) -- were taken by Green Bay.
The Bears, Lions, and Vikings have a combined ZERO players from the 2005 draft. Crazy!
"There's a lot of interest in the draft. It's great. But quite frankly, most of the people that are commenting on it don't know anything about what they are talking about."--Ted Thompson

    yuck!
"I would love to have a guy that always gets the key hit, a pitcher that always makes his best pitch and a manager that can always make the right decision. The problem is getting him to put down his beer and come out of the stands and do those things." - Danny Murraugh

Wow, that is nuts that they have zero played between the three of them.

Although the Vikings do have a 7th round pick this year that was acquired from the Redskins for Erasmus James.

Packers got a pretty solid group that year.
        Minnesota Vikings
NFC North Champions 2008 and 2009.

The article made an error. Michael Montgomery was drafted in the sixth round in 2005 with pick #180 and he's still on the Green Bay roster. He's not something you brag about to your friends, but the number of draft picks from that draft that have stuck with Green Bay is four, not three.

Neither is Brady Poppinga (something to brag to friends about).

Well, at least he's better than Troy Williamson, Erasmus James, Marcus Johnson, Dustin Fox, Ciatrick Fason, C.J. Mosley, Adrian Ward, Terrance Murphy, Marviel Underwood, Junius Coston, Mike "neon" Hawkins, Craig Bragg, Kurt Campbell, William Whitticker, Mike Williams, Shaun Cody, Stanley Wilson, Dan Orlovsky, Bill Swancutt, Johnathon Goddard, Cedric Benson, Mark Bradley, Airese Currie, Chris Harris, and Rod Wilson.

So if your friends are Troy Williamson, Erasmus James, Marcus Johnson, Dustin Fox, Ciatrick Fason, C.J. He's actually been pretty good for a 4th round pick.

Poppinga isn't better than several players you listed.

I think Poppinga was put into a defensive system that required him to something he doesn't do well, which is man coverage on backs and Tight Ends. I suspect he may be a better fit with Capers' defense than he was with Sanders. At any rate, not a bad 4th round pick. The loss of Murphy is what prevented this from being a really good draft.

Poppinga is an exceptionally good linebacker at gap control. He is an absolute perfect fit at LB in a 1 gap run defense scheme. The rest of his game is pretty bad, but when he is assigned a gap, the play does not go through his gap. Ever.

That is why the yearly carousel of LB's brought in to replace him never can. Nobody can replace his ability to control his gap in the run game. Which is responsibility #1 for a SLB. Everything else is the other part of the job description.
