I would like Raji and the team to be the ones to break the logjam in negotiations between the 6th and 12th picks.
I think he'll survive if he misses this coming week, as long as they don't rush him physically and get him hurt. But more than this week, and it's starting to look bad."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

Realistically players make a team based in their performance in team TC practices not based on their draft status or otherwise. He has to sign soon and get into the drills.
Both sides have to negotiate on that basis.

My first wish is that the league mandates the value of rookie contracts to be something along the lines the infamous draft value chart. I believe the top pick is 3000 points and the last pick 1 point. Seems an easy table to convert to dollars/years. I know it's anti capitalist, but hey, so is the NFL.
Lacking my first wish, my second wish is that rooks instruct the management to get 'em signed for TC to happen and negotiate the long term deal before the pre-season starts. I hate that rooks will get a zillion dollars to be behind in season one.

It seems to me that a very simple solution is to establish a cutoff date of Aug. 1 for rookies to sign, or they go back into the draft next year. You wouldn't even have to deal with a salary schedule, which sets itself by default anyway. The key is to get the players into camp for everyone's benefit.
- Training camp holdouts hurt both the player and the team, no one benefits.
- Players eventually sign, they wait (more accurately the agents and teams wait) because they can.
- Very little happens the first few months after the draft, moving up the deadline will start negotiations earlier.

let him sit, send a message. the message is worth more than BJ is. Make a final offer and drop it every day as his value drops with lack of camp time. Make it a five year deal too. Once game one starts make it a 5 year deal at the league minimum so he can't decide to sign in week 7 to get his year credit. Let him re-enter the draft and see if his value jumps or drops. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary -- Vince Lombardi

There already is a cutoff date, or more accurately "dates".Originally posted by VegasPackFanI dont know if a cutoff date would work. Would that give one side a marked advantage in negotiations? Would a team receive compensation for losing their draft pick becasue they couldnt make a deal?
If he doesn't sign by week 1 of the regular season, his rights can not be traded, and if he is signed, he can not be traded during the first year.
If he doesn't sign by week 10, he can not play that season.
If he doesn't sign by the first day of the draft in the following season, he becomes eligible for the draft again. (The original team receives nothing.)
Other rules apply if he signs with the CFL or some other professional league.

In the case where the player re-enters the draft, I believe that they cannot talk to or work out for any other team prior to the next draft, since the original team still owns the rights to the player right up until the day of the draft. That is alot different than declaring the player eligible to re-enter the draft as early as August 1st. Players would start controlling what teams they want to play for before they even earn FA rights.

Even if the NFLPA agreed to that, it would seem eminently vulnerable to a court challenge.Originally posted by PatlerIt seems to me that a very simple solution is to establish a cutoff date of Aug. 1 for rookies to sign, or they go back into the draft next year. Court challenge, for what? They already have a cutoff date, this is just moving the date. The team is under no obligation to sign the player for anything other than the minimum, which is automatically tendered by the draft. However, the team can withdraw the tender.Originally posted by pbmaxEven if the NFLPA agreed to that, it would seem eminently vulnerable to a court challenge.Originally posted by PatlerIt seems to me that a very simple solution is to establish a cutoff date of Aug. 1 for rookies to sign, or they go back into the draft next year. Doesn't MLB have a mid-August deadline for signing players from the May draft? What happens if a baseball player doesn't sign by then?

Only if they are willing to sit out an entire season or more, with no income. Heck, they could do that now if they wanted to.Originally posted by VegasPackFanIn the case where the player re-enters the draft, I believe that they cannot talk to or work out for any other team prior to the next draft, since the original team still owns the rights to the player right up until the day of the draft.
