Jones is pretty darn bad. Don't know how much "better" he is than Barbre, but speaking objectively, he is bad. First round pick unemployed. Yikes.

Pack work out Levi Jones

My fault, ty didn't mean to express he was a replacement for Barbre....ty was using Barbre as the measuring stick of badness.Originally posted by boigaFrom the article, he's being looked at as a stand in for Clifton, not Barbre. If Chad can't come back after the bye, I can understand the Packers looking for a way to get Colledge and Spitz back to their regular spots.
The thought of Barbre and Jones at the tackles is is outright scary..
Jones....i think was benched after j. allan destroyed him against the Bengals....almost got Palmer killed.

Much has been made this past week in the JSO and here that the Packers have no first round picks playing on the offensive line, and this is why the Packers' offensive line is not good.
This Levi Jones thing is merely an attempt to address this. He's a former first round pick."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

He had a rough rookie campaign (Holdout maybe?) but I thought he had developed into a reasonable player. Or are you saying I need to read the article?Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

I remember when the Bengals took him. What a reach.
Anyways I was looking at Colledge this past Sunday, and he has built himself into a guards. When he came into the league he was a bit lanky. Now he has some serious gerth and muscle. Even when he sucked he was always talked about being one of the hardest working players in the weight room and in the off season conditioning program. I think it has paid off, when he is at left guard and not at left tackle. I don't think he is a tackle anymore, and I am ok with that.

I know about Levi and it is an interesting situation. Levi would be a prospect for LT only, as has been said. The Bengals had a 1st class OLine with Levi and Willie Anderson at their tackle spots.
Levi in his prime was one of the best LT's in football. He has a great kick step. I saw him shut down Dwight Freeny when Dwight was just blossoming as a top RDE. Jones sustained a serious knee injury and the Bengals conned him into coming back far too soon for his own good.
Levi played thru the pain and actually did a great job on one leg. The leg never got back to 100% and Levi never played at the high level of his earlier years. the Bengals, in their brilliant management style, accused him of being a malingerer and cut his pay from the earlier contract levels. So Levi (& I don't really blame him) became a bitter, clubhouse lawyer type.
When he was banged up and needed time off, the Bengals cut him.
Should you sign him now?
Really depends on his physical status. If he has rehabbed the knee with the time off, he might just be worth it. He is a brawler and a scrapper on run blocking and knows every trick in the book in pass pro. All the circumstances that made him a problem in the locker room have faded into the past.
He may not be an answer against Jared Allen on monday, but he might just be a better answer than the kiddie corps we have at tackle on the bench if we get injuries at that position..

If the Pack does sign him, it might be a sign that Clifton's injury is more severe than let on. Although, the recent news that Cliffy might play Monday night clouds that prospect a bit, unless of course the Cliffy playing line is nothing more than a smoke screen.

What was his issue in 07...when Lewis benched him after allan roasted him?
Why has no team signed him....and he has been available since May. Especially with injuries in camps like barnes, Heyer, Terry, etc.
Sincere questions.
Could you detail the pay cut. Since he got a 30 million dollar contract in 06. Cause i don't recall the NFL being able to cut pay. What i recall is they asked him last year to take a pay cut and he refused. Are you saying that after the contract..prior to the 06 season...and before the 08 season they cut his pay before asking for another pay cut?
You time frame seems a bit off. Since he was drafted in 02..and got a new contract in 06...and then he was bothered by injuries..we have only 3 seasons to judge him on.
From 2-5 Jones played in 63 of of 64 regular season games, 60 started. Since 2005, played in 31 of 48 and started only 28.
He missed 10 in 06, 3 in 07 and 5 in 08.
By no means am i challenging your assesment of him as a player...and god knows the bengals FO sucks, but they did give him 30 mill...and he, injured or not...has hardly earned it.

Ty,
I didn't look anything up on Levi, I just noted what I remembered of the guy.
Your chronology is probably right and he did miss a ton of starts while he was carrying a pretty big ticket to the pay window. The Bengals didn't cut his pay, they just offered him less money, then cut him when he wouldn't take it? Sure, that was probably how he got handled. My point was that he did play when severely damaged and got treated poorly for doing so.
He had a beef with the way he was treated in Cincy and some of those feelings were justified.
I'm only interested in the idea he could help us thru a shaky patch at LT. That is a possibility, & I'd bring him in and work him out. He might be a solution and we can use one of those. He's definitely not the "final solution", but he might help.
He's out since May for a variety of reasons, one of which might be he can't play anymore. if he can go, he is better than the young bloods we have on the bench.

Like i said, no countering bengals effed up FO and his ability...but, they paid him big dollars...and, he didn't produce...whatever the reason.
Was jones the one that got in the fight with porter in Vegas?
