Woodbuck, permission to steal this line for a signature? Haven't seen it put better in a long time.

And I second Harvey's admonition that draft picks CANNOT hold out, as they have no contractual obligation to report. Even profootballtalk had this wrong on their usually precise site

And I am longing for the day when people will be more concerned in their signatures about first downs allowed than total number of tackles. Show me a team that has league leaders in tackles and I will show you a mediocre defense. Show me a team that allows the fewest first downs, I will show you the next NFC champs.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

I bet ya anything that Hawk was pissed at his agent who was probably assuring him over and over again that he would have the deal done by the start of camp. But, Hawkcouldn't have showed upfor practice . I mean, look what happened to LeCharles Bentley in Cleveland. If Hawk would have came to practice and had a serious injury, he would have been "up shit creek without a wooden device to help propel him through the muck" (or something like that). In other words, he was "between a rock and a not so soft place", I mean, really, "his hands were placed together tightly with a rope-like substrate", if you get my drift.

He isn't allowed to practice without a contract..so it's kinda moot (or mute for those that don't know the difference between moot and mute).

"holdout" is often used to describe a player who misses camp without signing a contract. I was looking at articles on the web. Useage is what defines a word.

Gotta side with the others on this one HH. I think the mainstream media has it all wrong on this one. You can't hold out if you aren't even on the friggen team.

Well, when you're drafted by a team, you are bound to that team.

Here's a formal definition: "a negotiator who hopes to gain concessions by refusing to come to terms" (I found similar definitions by googling) By this definition, a person still in process of negotiating a contract fits exactly.

It really is a case of usage. And far as I can see on the web, "holdout" is used for players with and without contracts. Reggie Bush was referred to as a "holdout" in most of the headlines before he signed.

Actually you can sit out without ever signing and the team loses your rights.
I think most headlines were wrong on this one...I guess we're arguing semantics here so I'll stop. I think we both know what the situation is, we just disagree on how it is reported.

sorry Rastak, but my blood is starting to boil. Gotta keep up the fight.

I think the headline writers got it right by the dictionary. And even if they were wrong, they are still right, since common useage trumps Webster.
