This guy has been praised more on here and similar boards more than any other human over the years. He will continue to be every free agent period no matter how many times you point out that he has won only 1 playoff game in his NFL carrier.
He sure looks like a football guy.

    Or a math teacher.

Swede: My expertise in this area is extensive. The essential difference between a "battleship" and an "aircraft carrier" is that an aircraft carrier requires five direct hits to sink, but it takes only four direct hits to sink a battleship.

Don't they still have to interview a black guy?

The NFL is really a piece of work....

              From a AP article:

"Zorn's dismissal had been expected for months. The front office stripped him of his play-calling duties in late October, and Snyder has interviewed assistant coach Jerry Gray for the job weeks ago, according to the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors minority hiring in the NFL."

An earlier version of this same article included a phrase like, "..in order to satisfy the minority hiring requirement..." That phrase has since been deleted.

Hey, what about women, the transgendered, midgets....? What condescension!

Condescension perhaps. But not as bad as being ignored outright as was the case before. And no one is arguing women or paraplegics are under-represented among the game's coaches and front offices. Just scanning my memory, but I can't turn up a memory of them playing the game.

But as someone who has no rooting interest in the Redskins succeeding (and might see the Pack benefit from their continued slide), I am glad Danny Boy is still hiring in this manner. By simply skipping a serious interview process that would include people he is unfamiliar with but would come highly recommended, he only considers those he is friendly with* and will make a big splash. Given that he clearly does not understand Shanahan's weaknesses with drafting and defense, it should ensure little serious competition for the Packers. So for purely selfish reasons, I hope Snyder continues to evade the spirit of the rule, making bad hires and driving the Redskins into the ground while pocketing millions.

                * There is a story that Shanahan becoming the Redskin coach was inevitable after Snyder and the coach became friends over dinners while staying at the same hotel for a league event. The Pro Bowl, I think.

I disagree. Quotas are bad for everyone. It's condescending and stereotypes whole classes of people. We should strive to be a meritocracy, not a collection of special interest groups. This is especially true in professional sports.

It's 2010, not 1961 or 1861. American society has fundamentally changed. It's time to quit living in the past.

Well really, with any fanbase with passionate fans there are going to be people that think the coach, manager, GM, owner, etc. all need to be replaced immediately (with no mention of anybody they think would be better), no matter how good these people are at what they do. The problem is only when reasonable people start taking these arguments seriously.

I would agree with you that society has changed and that outright displays of physical and hostile racism are mostly memory, but the predominance of white coaches and GMs in the professional league prior to the Rooney Rule AND the predominance of white coaches and athletic directors in major D1 college programs indicates something still inhibits certain members of the fraternity from getting promoted.

So not everything has changed. And it still isn't a level playing field. No one has a quota to hire in the NFL. Teams are being asked to open their mind to a candidate they may not have considered at first glance. And I don't think its a coincidence that the owners who go for the most ridiculous measures to avoid the spirit of the rule (only abiding by the most narrow letter of the rule) are the ones whose hiring practices are failing them.

Any reasonable business would reach out to find the most qualified candidate they could afford. These Owners never look past headlines and friendships. As I said in the other post, their loss. There is a strategic advantage to them making poor choices.
