It's up to the position coaches to work with their groups on techniques, individual performances, etc. I doubt Philbin spends any more time with the line than he does with the receivers or backs at this point.

There were 2 decisions regarding the OL made before the season that had major consequences once the season began. The first was the anointing of Barbre as the starting RT, and the decision to stick with him. The other was the decision to have Tony Moll take the snaps as 2nd team LT, which left the team vulnerable to a Clifton injury once Moll was traded. Who was responsible? McCarthy? Campen? Philbin? Thompson? A combination of the preceding? One thing I don't want to see next year is an offensive line in disarray at the start of the season. It likely cost us the NFC North this year.

The addition of Capers really turned the defense around. It has become abundantly clear that other areas of McCarthy's staff need the same serious shakeup...many have already been mentioned.

Stock needs to go. Campen needs to go. McCarthy needs to realize the lack of development in these areas and go out and find capable coaches that can IMPROVE the roster.

            Sorry...Slocum.

There have been so many piss poor coaches involved with special teams recently, they are all melding together in my mind.

The Pack must win the Central Division next year. To do that, they're gonna have to learn how to beat Favre, which means they're gonna have to import some more passing rushing talent. Either that or they're gonna have to buy Dom Capers a tighter jock strap.
One time Lombardi was disgusted with the team in practice and told them they were going to have to start with the basics. He held up a ball and said: "This is a football." McGee immediately called out, "Stop, coach, you're going too fast," and that gave everyone a laugh.

The coverage will get tighter with another year to learn from their own mistakes on film. Plus there will be one or two new DBs on the roster next year. Bretsky will be hoping for vets, but the only guarantee is turnover.

And they will need some extra pash rush from somewhere. If they get both, they will be dangerous.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

To make that happen they are going to have to get rid of some of the perennial problem guys...like Blackmon (Too fragile) and Bush (Too undependable). Plus make up their minds on guys like Underwood and Lee. (These guys have to produce or be gone.) Plus, they have to thin out the guys they picked up during the season as band-aids: Bell, Martin and Giordano.

As far as the pass rush, they've got to get rid of in-betweeners (guys who are half-linemen and half-LB): Montgomery, Wynn, Kampman, Poppinga, Thompson.

I think a lot of these personnel problems result from the switchover to the 3-4. We still got some guys that just don't fit in.

Thought this was an interesting take on Kampman:

Aaron Kampman: Showed the same pass-rush ability in his first season as a converted defensive end, finishing second on the team with 28 quarterback hits despite playing in only nine games before he blew out his left knee. Didn’t handle the coverage aspect of playing the position that well, although he gave up only three completions (and one touchdown) on nine passes thrown his way. Probably remains a better fit as a 4-3 end but his injury complicates his future as an unrestricted free agent.

                              Grade: C-plus

The article says Kampman didn't handle coverage well, yet he only gave up 3 completions. Could it be that Kampman gets the job done, but just doesn't look very good doing it? Or could it be that because some people predicted Kampman would struggle in coverage that they're sticking with it? I just think maybe the whole "Kampman Struggled" thing was overblown, and would like to see him come back and see if he can be better next year.

Perhaps also was the notion floating around at the beginning of the season that he didn't want to be playing 3-4 so people figured he wouldn't be good at it.
