  • The Kansas City Chiefs, like the Green Bay Packers, shifted to the 3-4 defense before the last season. However, things didn't go nearly as well in Kansas City as in Green Bay as the Chiefs pass defense was execrable last year. The two thing the Packers did well in the draft last year to usher in their shift was "acquire a nose tackle" and "acquire a pass rushing OLB". Both positions are positions of need for the Chiefs. With the top three NTs off the board, the Chiefs take a serious look at North Carolina's Cam Thomas, who is the best remaining NT. However he, or ECU's Linval Joseph will probably be available at the 50th pick as there's a lot of quality players left so it's not necessary to reach for a need.

The Chiefs again are this close to taking a WR, as Georgia Tech's Demaryius Thomas has the physical tools to be a dominant receiver in this league, but he's extremely raw and played in an option offense. But with only two WRs being taken at this point, they can wait and see who lasts.

So the Chiefs, needing immediate help on the defense take a look at the rookies who made the pro bowl last year. At a count you had one safety (Jarius Byrd) and three OLBs (Matthews, Cushing, and Orakpo). Having already taken the best safety prospect since Jason Taylor in the first round, the Chiefs elect to improve their pass defense by sacking the quarterback by taking the best remaining (possibly best period) pass rusher, TCU's Jerry Hughes.

            • Redskins took Clausen in our Mock. Remaining needs include Tackle (desperate), Guard, and Safety. Reasonable performance can be had at safety later in this draft and the Wash defense fared better than its O in Aught 9. I think the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons will select someone to keep Campbell and Clausen upright. Candidates include Ducasse, Saffold, Jerry and Veldheer. For today, it says here:

With the 5th pick of the Second Round, the Washington Redskins select Roger Saffold, OT, University of Indiana.

Renowned as a drive blocker, he has numbers that suggest someone who can move his feet. His forty times were slightly slower than Veldheer, but his shorter splits were close, he was better than the heavier Ducasse in agility and even matched the freakish Veldheer in the broad jump. He faced top flight competition in the Big Ten. No, I am not saying that ironically.

The Skins will be running the ZBS, and any of these three would seem to fit. Veldheer is 6' 8" and might be able to reach block the opposite side D Tackle.

He was impressive against active, spinning pass rushers and showed great strength as a drive blocker. He continued to impress NFL teams with a great workout at the combine and followed up by showing excellent agility in his pro day drills. Before that, it seems the most attention he received was unwanted ??? seven penalties in his senior season. He was bothered by back and knee injuries in 2008, missing two games. But according to coaching statistics, Saffold allowed three sacks and one pressure in his final 440 college pass plays. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY

              • Browns sagely took Joe Haden, CB, in our First Round Mock and still need a QB, WR, Safeties, DE and some say linebackers, though, Mangenius maintained after trading Wimbley that he liked their depth there and named everyone left with a number in the 50s.

The Browns defense needed pass rush help even when they had Wimbley and Williams. With both gone, I cannot see them passing up an OLB who can rush the passer but the top tier talents are gone (Misi and Sapp have the size a Parcells/Belicheck defense would want at OLB but each is new to OLB) and they did sign SOLB Scott Fujita. When I have seen Fujita, he was covering even as a SAM in a 4-3, but the Browns might think he can get after the QB. In either case, there would not seem to be value for that skill set at OLB for this pick.

Earl Thomas has visited (in our Mock he is long gone) and the Browns have watched McCoy, Clausen and Bradford workout. Holmgren has said he is taking a QB this draft but then intentionally or not has scrambled everyone's opinions by talking down Clausen. Since he won't get Bradford or Clausen if he sits behind the Rams and Redskins, then he would seem to be telegraphing McCoy or Dan LaSomething. Nate Allen at safety would be the next most likely pick if they go defense after a CB in Round 1. Demaryius Thomas at WR might be the best physical talent left on the board.

Since they are going to run Holmgren's offense, the QB will need to pass his test. McCoy is slightly bigger than Brees, but shy of Hasselback's size, though not by much. His production is college is greater than anyone Holmgren has had except Detmer. My problem would be the caliber of defenses he faced, week in and week out. But I am going to take Holmgren at his word (he was pulling a double fake) and announce:

With the sixth pick in the Second Round of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Colt McCoy, QB, University of Texas.

McCoy, the third-rated quarterback in the draft according to most experts, is projected to go in the second round -- after first-round prospects Sam Bradford of Oklahoma and Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame. Browns President Mike Holmgren has said he'll take a quarterback in the draft and is weighing all of his options. He said he likes possible No. 1 overall pick Bradford a lot but that it would be difficult for the Browns to move up to draft him. He also told The Plain Dealer that Clausen is not really his type of player. He hasn't yet commented publicly on McCoy, who leaves Texas as the winningest quarterback in NCAA history. Pro Football Weekly surmises that McCoy would function well in the West Coast offense because of his average arm strength and that McCoy is "in a similar mold as Jeff Garcia, who can will his way into a starting job." McCoy (6-1, 210) threw 112 touchdowns and 45 interceptions in his four years as a starter at Texas, with a 70.3 percent completion rate. Holmgren has already acknowledged that he'll spend some extra time before the draft with Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and said he'll do the same with four or five others. In 2009, McCoy passed for 3,521 yards with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. - Mary Kay Cabot, The Cleveland Plain Deale

Thanks, much appreciated and kind of fits considering I now have both picks that should have been belonging to the Bears. They could have had Dez Bryant already which would have given Cutler a good WR, can't imagine how bad it will look after I'm done with the pick they gave away for Gaines Adams as well; R.I.P.

Am I taking #3 in this round as well? That would give me Rams, Bucs, Dolphins, and Broncos's picks. Sounds like fun.

YES, go ahead and select in the 3 spot for the Bucs as well; I know who I'd pick for sure so it'll be interesting to see if you nab the same guy.

Was looking at Tate as well but since he was gone needed to go with a lesser WR or a better defensive player. I don't see any way they take McCoy with Freeman being a first round pick last year and them trying to trade a QB because they think they have to many; rumored to be trying to trade Leftwich and/or Josh Johnson for whatever they can get.

Totally agree with you on this one. I don't see them taking Tate to be their # 3/4 WR when they have so many other pressing needs that can be addressed with the players that were left. One of the two CB's left would have been a great choice for them.

Burleson has never been more than maybe a slightly above average receiver. He won't really impact whether they take Tate. They need another threat so that teams can't double team CJ all the time. With all the top OT's gone, I could see them taking Tate.
