GB Cut 4 Players

The timing indicate to me that some signings are imminent if not overdue.

The Bears had their draft picks signed before Memorial Day weekend.

Just because there are 3 months to get the signings done doesn't mean they should sit around until the last minute to get started.

Now there are only 41 days to get the process complete without harming the team.

The Packers have yet to announce the signing of any draft picks, but the roster size was at 79 before Friday’s transactions. With an 80-man limit, some players were bound to be released to make room for the signing of draft picks.

Harrell, the former Texas Tech star who threw for 5,111 yards and 45 touchdowns as a senior in 2008, was signed by the Packers May 20 after playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League last season. The Packers only kept two quarterbacks on their active roster in 2009. Harrell (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) is third on the depth chart behind Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn. Chris Pizzotti was released when Harrell signed.

“We really felt Graham came in and had a heck of a workout,” coach Mike McCarthy said after an organized team activity practice June 2. “He had the opportunity in Cleveland and had some very good college tape, and had some very good grades from our scouting department.

“I was impressed with his velocity. That’s something that was probably a little in question coming out of college in my opinion.”

Harrell had a workout with the Cleveland Browns before signing with Saskatchewan last year, then worked out for the Browns again this year before signing with the Packers.

The Bears have in recent memory always signed their draft picks very, very early. There's a couple reasons for this, first is that you avoid any chance of a protracted holdout and the Bears have gotten burned by that in the past. The second is that rather than reacting to the going rate for a player in that slot, you set the going rate for the player in that slot. For later round guys, the agent and the team won't be further apart on compensation than maybe a couple thousand, so those deals are easy to get done if you want. What you give up, though, is the ability to keep a larger roster through OTAs.

Our GM on the other hand, is a strong believer in extended evaluation of even longshot prospects (you can see this from how Ted cycles the practice squad). Apparently he had seen enough of these four guys, and as Patler so smartly pointed out, that since they were first up for the chopping block there would be no reason to bring them to an OTA where the Packers would be liable if they got hurt.

I heard that Bush is actually really good on special teams - if thats the case I don't mind him being here, just don't want to see him on hte field defensively.

We've been hearing that for years. Unfortunately there is no video evidence to collaborate that claim.

Plus, there's really only room for so many defensive backs who aren't that good in coverage but are reportedly good at special teams on the roster.

I mean, with Derrick Martin, Jarrett Bush, and Will Blackmon our special teams really ought to be better since those guys aren't stellar in the defensive backfield.

The noteworthy one here is the release of Shepard, who to our knowledge, was one of only two quarterbacks the Packers worked out or brought into Green Bay during the pre-draft process. A run-pass threat at South Dakota, Shepard possessed plenty of zip on his balls but only too rarely threw a spiral.

[With the release of Knicky,] the big winner is Frank Zombo/Robert Francois. Zombo, Knicky and John Russell were the three outside linebackers the Packers added after the draft. Knicky appeared to be the early front-runner – he was a pass-rushing ace at Stephen F. Austin and frequently earned the first rep when the rookies were put on the field during the first couple offseason practices. The Packers need a fifth outside linebacker, and he’ll come from the group including Francois, Zombo and Russell. Russell, a former defensive tackle at Wake Forest, seems like a project. Zombo (6-3, 254) was a productive player at Central Michigan and Francois (6-3, 253) was a late addition to the practice squad last season. At the one practice open to reporters last week, Francois was given a couple reps with the second unit.

As for Ford, strike that up as a victory for undrafted rookie Sam Shields, the raw-as-meat speed demon from Miami who should get a few more reps.

As for Jones, he was the receiver-turned-safety. I guess I’m a bit surprised that they’ve given up so early on that project.

Anyone else find it odd that they quote his college stats instead of his CFL stats?

I would think CFL is a bit more relevant - it is a pro league, and although it obviously isn't on par with NFL, it's more relevant than the college game! At least all the guys are getting paid (unlike college, where only some do )

I would guess it's because most in the US can better relate to college numbers than CFL numbers. Certainly in the CFL though, there's a more homegenous talent base, no Div IIA teams showing up for powderpuff home opener games.

Sure there is. Here is Jarrett Bush earning his reputation as a great special teams player by being involved in two turnovers in a game we won by 3 that started the amazing 2007 season. In the first play on this video, you'll see Bush deliver a gorgeous hit to force a muffed punt that gets recovered for a TD to start the game. Then check the 1:30 mark where he recovers another muffed punt to set up the game winning FG. He also had three tackles on other special teams plays in that game-

But...

He doesn't do it enough, nor is he consistent in his play. He has made very little improvement in his play at CB or or S. I really can't see why we have all these ST Wizards when we finish last in ST in the NFL. Seems like we could finish last without all these guys cluttering up the roster.

Bush didn't receive all that interest last year as a free agent because of his play as a DB. It was for his special teams play. Other teams saw it in him.

The situation that will hurt Bush is #s. That's why both he and Blackmon are being tried also as safeties. The last corner, safety, linebacker and even receiver are often kept for their return or coverage abilities more than their play from scrimmage on offense or defense. The Packers have accumulated a lot of DB special teams specialists, Blackmon, Bush, Martin, maybe Shields. They can't keep them all., I doubt.

That's the part that has made me scratch my head. Blackmon, Bush, Martin, Poppinga, Hall, Havner, Kuhn, Lee, Swain, Bishop, Chiller have all been pointed out as "special" on special teams at various times. It seems the value of the total is LESS than the sum of the parts!

I heard that Bush is actually really good on special teams - if thats the case I don't mind him being here, just don't want to see him on hte field defensively.

We've been hearing that for years. Unfortunately there is no video evidence to collaborate that claim.

Sure there is. Here is Jarrett Bush earning his reputation as a great special teams player by being involved in two turnovers in a game we won by 3 that started the amazing 2007 season. In the first play on this video, you'll see Bush deliver a gorgeous hit to force a muffed punt that gets recovered for a TD to start the game. Then check the 1:30 mark where he recovers another muffed punt to set up the game winning FG. He also had three tackles on other special teams plays in that game-
