  • Candidates for PUP?

According to today's JSO article on Bulaga's near-deal, with Bigby signing his tender, the Pack will need to cut or get rid of two players to open roster spots.

The PUP was mentioned as one way to stash players for a while, as opposed to dumping players. According to the article, players can be put on the PUP but be reactivated at any time. I did not know that. I thought that players put on the PUP list were out for the first six weeks of the season. But maybe that's just the maximum amount of time they can be kept out.

Anyway, candidates for the PUP were mentioned: Driver, Blackmon, Lang, Harris. (Note that Justin Harrell was not listed.)

So...would you consider putting any of the above, or anyone else, on the PUP? Could you assign Bigby to it if he's still healing up his ankle? Could you do like an NBA team and create a phantom injury so you could hide someone for a month or so? (Brandon Underwood does have a sprained brain, after all).

players on pup at the start of the regular season stay for 6 weeks. until then they can be activated at any time. after the 6 weeks teams have 3 weeks to put them on the active roster. at that point, they're either active, or on IR.

Ah - thank you. So would you use the PUP in order to clear a couple spots?

Don't forget the training camp PUP/Active list. That's where they don't count against the roster until they practice. Then there's the in-season PUP/Inactive list. That's the one where the player must miss the first 6 games.

I doubt it. They've got a lot of guys competing for the bottom 10 slots on the roster. Not sure it makes much difference who they keep and who they get rid of.

I think Al Harris starting TC on PUP is a given. Blackmon might be too.

Well, as soon as Bigby and Bulaga officially sign, we're over the roster limit by 2. If there were a couple of guys they were sure they're going to cut in the first round of cuts, they would have been cut by now.

The quick and dirty way to account for those two roster spots is to list on PUP two guys who are coming back from injury who wouldn't be thrust back in immediately anyway (e.g. Al Harris, Will Blackmon, Spencer Havner, TJ Lang are all candidates).

Since Harris and Driver don't really need the practice like the young guys, you could put them on the PUP and clear a couple spaces until you see how the fullback battle or the tight end battle shakes out.

Brian Carriveau tweeted from the shareholders meeting that Frank Zombo and Aleric Mullins were both omitted from the roster as listed during TT's presentation. No explicit mention was made of any roster moves, nor does the Packer.com website reflect any changes at this point.

Yes. If they are on PUP at the start of camp, the team has many more options to reactivate during pre-season. As RG pointed out, the mandatory 6 game wait is only for those on the list at the start of the reg season.

Aleric Mullins was placed on the Reserve list. JSO had no specific reason but speculated that his physical condition (heart murmur) might have changed. He had been passed on his physical earlier this year. They have one more move to make.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Russell was waived. One guy is on the did not report list.

The Milwaukee paper said that Active PUP players count against the current 80 player roster. Perhaps that is why the adjective active is used.

I had some hopes for Starks. Being on the PUP is not a good thing. If he limps around with a hamstring and misses time from camp like Matthews did last year who knows what will become of him.

(Where are you with the injured guys?)
Injured guys, we had three players that did not pass their physicals that will start out on PUP in Al Harris, Atari Bigby and James Starks

I'd be surprised if any of these guys start the regular season on PUP. The news on Harris sounds pretty good. Bigby they might cut if he can't get healthy in the next 6 weeks. Hard to know about Starks. Hamstring injuries are always hard to predict.
