Actually that's happened a number of times. A few years ago the Packers had a rookie tear an ACL in a pre-season game, stay in, and run for a long touchdown. Two years ago, Gallardo pitched a couple of innings for the Brewers after tearing his ACL. I've read that a complete tear sometimes does not hurt like a partial tear, so the player may not notice right away.
