Here's a nice bit about directional punting that Peter King put up. It's from Chris (Warcraft) Kluwe from the Vikes.

Good article, and response (from a guy, admitedly, who bitched about playing outside).
We all take it for granted that the punter should be able to put it out of bounds, 30+ yards down the field every time. Not so easy, apparently.
I agree with him. I've got a good boot, and can pretty consistently drop kick a soccer ball where I want it near mid-field. But, maybe one time in 20, particularly near the end of the game if I'm getting tired, and my foot is sore, one of my fullbacks is scrambling for it!--
Imagine for a moment a world without hypothetical situations...

Your thinking like MM here. Truth is you GAIN field position by not giving him a shot. You would only lose position if you think he can't return it to where you are "giving up" field position.Originally posted by Bretsky View PostHESTER
Perhaps we lose field position by not giving him a shot but at least we don't give up a TD
bobbleheads strategy is 1) Never punt, if you must, go for it on 4th 2) Onside kick every kick, you are bound to recover one, and if you kick away hester is bound to return one. Net, one possession extra and one less score against for the loss of field position.

The first think is to make sure the officials are aware of the holds and blocks in the back that get him open. They seem to completely close their eyes on his returns. He's seriously not as good as he was a few years back: he's just getting the calls from the officials like the rest of the overrated team is.

I party agree with you. The 3 bears games I have watched where he was awesom in all 3, I saw several marginal blocks in the back that we would have gotten called for.Originally posted by MichiganPackerFan View PostThe first think is to make sure the officials are aware of the holds and blocks in the back that get him open. There is some wisdom in your insanity. Teams should go for it on 4th down more often. But onside kicks have a low chance of recovery. Kick the punt out of bounds for 35 yards if you have to and skyrocket the kickoff or send it on a line through the back of the endzone if wind conditions permit.Originally posted by bobblehead View PostYour thinking like MM here.
