  • How Capers Is Doing Voodoo

    From McGinn today on JSO:

The rare ability of Woodson (83 blitzes) both to rush and support against the run has enabled Capers to play more nickel and less base than ever before. After 16 games, the Packers have been in their 3-4 merely 23% of the time.

As calculating as Capers is, the only reason he has rushed five considerably more than a year ago is the coverage skill of Williams and Sam Shields.

The Packers play a substantial amount of man coverage in front of a two-safety shell on early downs because of their cornerbacks. In contrast, the Steelers are a zone team on early downs because their cornerbacks must be protected.

Paragraph one explains the slide in run D. Paragraph 2 speaks for itself, though I would expect that D line injuries also play a role in both the strategy and personnel. And the 3rd paragraph might be why TEs have been more successful as this D has improved against other targets.

Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

That's a lot of nickel. Even though it has resulted in an average run D, I think it's their best defense. (Not exactly earth shattering given their elite status defending QB's and not giving up points.)
