With help from our worldwide array of tiebreaking experts, I can bring you this playoff scenario: The Green Bay Packers can clinch the NFC North this weekend with a victory at the New York Giants and a loss by the Detroit Lions, who play at the New Orleans Saints.

In that scenario, the Packers would improve to 12-0, making it impossible for the Lions at 7-5 to catch them. And even if the Packers lost their remaining games, they would hold a tiebreaker advantage over the Chicago Bears if both teams finished the season 12-4. (Details for the curious: None of the first three tiebreakers -- head-to-head, division record and common opponents -- would settle the tie. It would be decided on conference record, which the Packers would win with a one-game advantage.)

The NFC West title will belong to the 49ers for the first time since 2002 if either they beat the Rams or benefit from losses by the second-place Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, who are both 4-7. The Seahawks host the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night, and the Cardinals host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

The Packers are the only team to have fewer than two losses after Week 12. They're one of two teams to have fewer than three losses.

NFC North Champions After Week 13?

The Packers can clinch the NFC North with a win over the Giants and a Lions' loss to the New Orleans Saints on December 4, 2011.

Assuming that the Packers don't beat the Giants, the Packers can win the NFC North with any win and then losses from the Bears and Lions. Furthermore, the Packers can win the division with any divisional win against the Bears or Lions in the final two games. This would give them a tiebreaker advantage as they couldn't finish any worse than 5-1 in divisional games. The Lions and Bears couldn't finish better than 4-2.

The Packers would need a monumental collapse to not win the NFC North. Therefore, let's look at the current standings and seeding possibilities.

Potential Seeding
NFC West: San Francisco 49ers (9-2; 7-1 conference record)

NFC South: New Orleans Saints (8-3; 5-3 conference record)), Atlanta Falcons (7-4; 5-4 conference record)

NFC East: Dallas Cowboys (7-4; 5-2 conference record), New York Giants (6-5; 3-5 conference record)

The Packers would have the tiebreaker advantage in any two-way ties with the Saints and Falcons because of their head-to-head victories in the regular season.
The Packers' 9-0 conference record already gives them a key three-way tiebreaker over the Falcons. The Falcons can't finish better than 8-4 in the conference. Assuming the Saints win out and go 13-3, the Packers need two more victories with one being a conference game. The Saints can't finish any better than 9-3 in the conference.

The Giants and Lions games are important for the Packers because they're a "Common game" when compared to the 49ers. The 49ers have already beaten the Giants and Lions.
Likewise, the 49ers have two games against the St. Louis Rams in the final five weeks. The Packers defeated the Rams 24-3 in Week 6.

Any upset from the Rams would be a damning blow to the 49ers' home-field advantage hopes because it'd hurt them in tiebreakers via conference record and common games.

Summary:

The Packers can basically clinch a first-round bye with one more conference win and a win against the Chiefs or Raiders.
That's 13 victories. The Cowboys can't win more than 12 games. The Saints would lose a three-way tiebreaker because of their conference record. They'd also lose a two-way tiebreaker because of their head-to-head loss in the regular-season opener.

The 49ers and Packers don't play during the regular season. The Packers currently have a one-game advantage in conference play. They're both undefeated in common games. The next tiebreaker would go to "Strength of victory." The Packers have a 54-point advantage with five games remaining.

A 14-2 record with victories against the Giants, Lions and Bears will clinch home-field advantage. Replace "Bears" with "Chiefs" or "Raiders" and the 49ers would still need to catch up in point differential.

But I guess this is where this is all meaningless because the Packers are running the table?

To add to the above Yahoo story is that right now the Strength of Victory for the Packers is .430 and the Strength of Schedule of games remaining is .5636. So SOV will rise over the remaining games.

The 49'ers current SOV is .444 and SOS of remaining games is .3636. So their remaining wins will reduce their SOV.
