  • Packers sign two Free Agents

The Green Bay Packers added depth to their secondary today by signing rookie free agents Antonio Malone and Jeremy Modkins. They released wide receiver Leo Bookman and guard/center Wayne Lucier.

Malone, a 6-foot, 188-pound cornerback from Toledo, had originally signed with the Detroit Lions in May. The Packers have assigned him jersey No. 20.

Modkins, a 6-foot, 197-pound safety out of Texas Christian, originally signed with the Cleveland Browns but was released in June. Modkins is No. 42 on the Packers' roster.

The Browns should pick up Lucier, he could start for them. I'm sad that we released him for two unprovens.

Somehow I'm a little concerned that we've netted -1 offensive lineman in this exchange.

Hopefully we can drop a punter for a guard one of these days. The Moll Train doesn't exactly fill me with great confidence.

Well, yip-fricken-eee!!! Does anybody know who these people are? Is there a reason why, as we speak, they are getting fitted for their green and gold jock straps?

I liked Wayne Lucier's versatility and he had experience. He seemed to have moved up and then. . .well he's gone.

Kind of disappointed we let Lucier go...I think that guy could be a player, or at least a very good back up. putting a lot of faith in Coston if he goes to center, and then White and Traynor.

Packers Sign Two Defensive Backs, Release Two Players
                  posted 08/15/2006

Adding depth to their secondary, the Green Bay Packers Tuesday signed rookie free agents Antonio Malone and Jeremy Modkins and released wide receiver Leo Bookman and guard/center Wayne Lucier. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions.

Malone, a 6-0, 188-pound cornerback from Toledo, was a three-year starter and four-year letterman for the Rockets who originally signed with the Detroit Lions in May. Along with his 38 tackles (20 solo) last season, Malone returned his lone 2005 interception 60 yards for a touchdown. The Packers have assigned him jersey No. 20.

Modkins, a 6-0, 197-pound safety out of Texas Christian, earned second-team all-conference honors as a senior, helping the Horned Frogs to a victory in the 2005 Houston Bowl over Iowa State. With Modkins contributing 67 tackles (44 solo) and three interceptions, TCU finished ninth in the final coaches poll and No. 11 in the Associated Press rankings. A three-year starter and four-year letterman at TCU, Modkins was a quarterback in high school. He originally signed with the Cleveland Browns but was released in June. Modkins is No. 42 on the Packers' roster.

Lemme get this straight. They started up the college, added an athletic program, and when they needed a mascot they looked into the ferocious animal world and chose THE HORNED FROGS??? That's worse than the Devil Rays!!!

How about having the Beavers(Oregon State) as your mascot?

I'll bet not too many teams have fear in their hearts when they learn the Beavers are coming to town!
