Who is there to groom? This postion is perhaps the hardest position at which to find great talent - or even good talent. I was dreading that this thread was morphing into a KGB thread. SO I'll focus on the other aspect

Who would you get to replace KGB? Who was being groomed? I think it was more a problem that the Packers couldn't get a run stopping DE for early downs. The Packers basically got reamed at DE for half a decade or more by the Jamal Reynolds bust - His inability resulted in the Johnson signing. Johnson's bust resulted in the need to keep KGB pretty much at all costs. The Packers had to sign KGB - he was very much in demand - perhaps overpriced - but there was nothing else really available. KGB isn't terrible, he's just more suited to being in on passing downs. You at least have to give the guy credit for playing a ton of snaps over the past several years. But again, I don't think I can stand the media pumping up some unknown rookie FA or cast off as though he will be the next Javon Kearse. AAUUUUUUGH!

I agree with McKenzie when he says that Hunter is a prospect worth looking at.

He's got speed off the edge, and while that may be his "one dimension" at this point, it is the most important prerequisite for a DE to have.

If he can add another 10 lbs, and develop his hand technique and a counter move he could turn into a player.

How would you feel about adding another undersized-shitty-against-the-run-end in Freeney?

It would be good if we could just get a guy that could defend the run on running downs, and bring in KGB, Montgomery, whomever on passing downs. Problem is, who is the run stopping DE? Kenny Peterson looks like a pile of dog dung this preseason.

Defending the run will never be a strength for Hunter... You bring him in on obvious passing downs, and perhaps slide Kampman inside. Although I don't think Kampman functions very well inside - G's tie him up too easily.

Hunter has shown good burst and a good motor. Yes, he's undersized, but if used properly, he could definitely provide a boost to a dead pass rush.

That said, they've had an undersized end on their roster for years (KGB) and have yet to use him properly... maybe they'll try Hunter at Guard???
