Maybe it's just because I often utilized Madden 08 to do what this article is saying (i.e. call a run with pass audibles in the same formation and hot route the receiver based on coverage), but I thought this idea was common already. Apparently I was wrong.

The idea was common. Such a well thought out explination was not. There are a lot of teams were things just do not run like this. Heck, back in the late 90's, things weren't run like this. It's a relatively new idea. It's a pretty good one too. The problem with it is that you need an extremely intelligent and accurate QB to take advantage of the system, otherwise you just get pulverised. We saw a lot of that early in Rodgers career with all the sacks he took because he didn't make decisions fast enough.
