I haven't been impressed with M.D. Jennings all summer. The sooner they want to go with McMillian the better as far as I'm concerned.
I thought run D was better in nickel sometimes. Perry/Matthews seemed to hold up better than Wilson/Merling.

Why can't the Packers find the bodies the Steelers find? I saw one guy (not Hampton or Keisel) just two handed punch an O lineman and just shock him still and upright.

I don't see that unless its run D, which is still a concern.

Pass rush definitely ticked up, Matthews looked at home on the Right side and Perry had several good pushes.

Coverage looked worse for different reasons. Lots of blown coverages on movement, less trouble one on one and in man. Tackling wasn't a clinic but there were

Offense was most troubling to me. And I don't even know where to begin, other than running the ball was a non-starter, but thats not news. There were a lot of free rushers, but it seemed that Rodgers was either inviting it or did not see it and that hasn't been common for him since 08.
They were outcoached - pure and simple. Equally true that they were outmuscled and bitch slapped all over the field by a tougher team, but for me this game came down to lousy coaching.

Our receivers were blanketed, every pass was contested. Their receivers were running free all over the field - that's coaching.

One can say that Jarret Bush has his head up his ass... which is true, but the coaches are the ones putting those guys in position to makes plays - or not; they selected the roster; and while the pass rush was slightly better, that can be attributed to the influx in talent to the front seven - not anything that the coaching staff, especially Capers may have done.

I'm officially on the fire Dom bandwagon now.

      • The 49ers upgraded and changed their passing game this year. I'm not shocked they shook people free. I am disappointed the Packers still cannot play a zone coverage with any effectiveness. I understand Justin's point about the CBs being designed to play man, but its the other bodies who always seem out of position that worry me. It wasn't Tramon who lost Moss on his TD. It was Burnett, the guy calling the D.

My disappointment is equal with McCarty and the offense. Buts its nothing to do with physical play. Its about why, when presented with an unanticipated but completely predictable coverage they play like they have never seen it before. Several times a season. Is it all about pressure?

This game wouldn't have been close if not for Cobb and a gift of a return and it was the offense who was sputtering worse.

        • Packers D held 49ers to 2 of 9 on 3rd down, so that's nice. Problem is that the 9ers had 22 first downs, so 17 of them did not even require 3rd down (3 were by penalty).

          • The 49ers defense is fucking amazing. The only problem I had with the offense was that we tried to run it. If we would have passed all game, we would have been far better off. Still, I thought the offense did enough against a great defense.

The defense did not do enough against a good offense. We just can't beat great teams with the defense we have. And I'm not sure that has so much to do with Capers as it does with players. If I had to pass out blame, I'd pass most of it to Ted Thompson for not finding good secondary players.

Everyone wanted to fire James Campen. Now we have Bulaga, Sitton and Lang playing really well. It looks like Newhouse is a player too. Every coach looks bad with bad players.

And we're not going to look this bad every game. Against most teams, we will be able to play more man defense.

Yep. Remember the offseason. There was a lot of talk about the Packers improving on 3rd down because of the pass rush, but not much anywhere else. . . . Yeah, I think that might be the case. Problem is, we still have trouble getting them to 3rd down.

We have 15 more games ahead of us, and we just went up against one of the most experienced, talented teams in the league. Of course they came out of the gate hot. Their whole team is ready to play on day 1. There's time, but boy, we have to start seeing improvement in our zone defense. And I see exactly what you're saying about the safeties. If Capers had any confidence in them, he wouldn't have been playing the corners so soft. It's like they were terrified of anyone getting behind them, like the safeties weren't even on the field. If that is any indication of how Capers feels about our safeties, we might be in really big trouble all year.

Safeties might have been helping a lot on VD too, leaving the corners to have to play safer. . . . Whatever. We went against a great team. We had some coverage gaffs. WE've had zone problems in the past, they showed up again today. We'll just have to see how it pans out.

Steelers might give up 30 pts yet.

                • So much went wrong today.

Secondary miscommunication. Bush giving way too much cushion. Rogers throwing for 60 yards on a 3rd and 1 when he could have ran or hit Kuhn for a 1st down. Run D getting gashed in the second half. Rogers INT gave 49ers a very short field. No turnovers for the 49ers. Refs not calling blatantly obvious PIs, holding, etc. Poor tackling at times.

My biggest concern is the defense. I really thought the secondary would be much better this year. The front seven wasn't perfect, but looked pretty good. Alex Smith didn't beat this defense because he had all day in the pocket. He beat us because the secondary was playing with their head up their asses. The constant miscommunication is getting old. I know Bush is the consistent scapegoat and he deserves most of the blame, but I'm really starting to question Burnett. I think he has his head up his ass just as much as Bush does.

                  • Positives - Clay Mathews, Cobb, Newhouse (Newhouse had a shaky start, but settled in nicely) and Benson. Benson you ask? He didn't fumble and got positive yardage on every run (I think).

The offense scored 15 points at home. 2 times on 10 possessions. Not even close enough on 6 possessions for a FG (1 possession INT, 1 ended on downs). That's not enough.

Sure. On the road and missing Clark and Harrison. This Steeler D is old and not as good as it used to be, but their D line is not the problem.

The O line, on the other hand, showed its true colors at the end.

Wow....that was a stinker. Can you have a wake-up call in Week 1?

                            Yes.

Lets see how the bears game goes. I have some shit to talk at work. Beware a pissed off Pack. And, yes, I am drunk.

                            So:

Finley, too many dropped balls. He is what he is. A head-case. I am done giving him the benefit of the doubt.

AJHawk: Adequate, but no more. Needs to be replaced.

Dom: I am about ready to kick him to the curb for his soft ass defense. Other than CMIII, wtf?

The secondary: i like Bush. Really, I do. As a special teamer. But as a starter? Fuck THAT.

Bomb on a 3rd and one? Shit. I saw that coming. And I am a football retard. M3, you Dumb-shit, hand it to CB. No-one, and I mean no-one, will see that coming..........

THAT being said, it's a long season. 10-6 makes the playoffs, and who knows from there.......

                            • Ouch.

I thought Justin Harrell was crazy for suggesting that McCarthy would insist on running at the 9ers defense. Looks like the lunatic rat is not that loony. We should've kept Cobb in the backfield and kept throwing him outlet passes until the D crept up.

I can't believe Moss got the catches he did. He can't run anymore. Someone tell Jarrett Bush that.

Our ILBs are slow and that's not going to change.

Too much confusion in the secondary. Was Nick Collins a member of mensa? Why can't we get lined up? Also, don't put Nick Perry on Crabtree in the slot, that's what we pay cornerbacks for.

I'm not super depressed about this game, weirdly. Our pass rush looks better (Except that Dezman Moses didn't do anything against the starters, that's a disapointment). Tramon is back. Shields is ready to ball. Bush and MD Jennings can't start, which was clear to most people in preseason, but the coaches should figure that out now. Newhouse is better than I thought he was. I like Merling on the Dline. James Jones and Randall Cobb looked dangerous. And Navarro Bowman only plays for one team.

And just to put it out there: Anyone who complains about the refs screwing us this game when they gave us a free touchdown, should probably start smoking crack to clear up their mind a little bit.

                              • I thought Hawk was okay yesterday. Smith looked a little lost. Yes, Perry should not be covering Crabtree for Christ's sake. Clay was amazing. I have an issue with our secondary coach. How come our guys have no clue out there? Williams is indeed back but we all better light novena candles for House's speedy recovery! Bush is great on ST but stinks as a corner. Too bad Daniels was inactive. We could have used him because Worthy was invisible. Hopefully he'll improve week to week.
