Actually, it looks to be for 2 2nd round picks. However, the trade can't be finalized until March 12, so this deal could fall apart or change.

      I just checked that:

The 49ers completed a trade that will send Alex Smith to Kansas City, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports. The 49ers will receive a second-round pick in 2013 and a “similar pick” in 2014, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News. The trade can’t officially be made until March 12 when the new league year begins

We don't need to wait to declare Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers big-time winners in the team's trade with the Kansas City Chiefs involving quarterback Alex Smith.

San Francisco 49ers get richer with Alex Smith deal

By Gregg Rosenthal ... Around The League Editor

        Published: Feb. 27, 2013 at 12:46 p.m

" Let's review. The 49ers now have two picks in the top 34 overall, and at least five picks in the first three rounds. They have 12 picks overall, with more compensatory picks expected to be on the way. San Francisco is in position to increase their talent base significantly in the next two months through the draft or trades.

The 49ers can move up in the draft if they want. Or perhaps they now have ammo to pull off a big trade for a veteran player. They were reportedly kicking the tires on free agent cornerbacks at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the best cornerback in football, Darrelle Revis, just happens to be available. "

San Francisco will be laughing all the way to the bank on this one. Two 2nd round picks for an average QB at best? You have to be kidding me.

Things certainly do look rosy for SF right now.

I guess Alex Smith works for KC, he's 28 and reasonably proven. But it's not like they're getting much younger, Cassel is only 2 years older, I guess they've entirely given up on him. A second round pick (top of the second round...) and $40 million over 3 years...ouch!

Chiefs have some talent. If Smith plays well for them, he's worth 2 2nd round picks. Andy Reid has been known to abandon the running game though, so it will be interesting to see if Smith is a good fit for what Reid wants to do.

That's not the news. The news is KC just traded away more picks for another guy who'll ensure the absolute struggle for mediocrity continues for that god forsaken team.

Until SF uses those picks, this has no bearing on the 49ers or, more importantly what it'll take for GB to compete with them - which is obvious anyway - to improve the talent of the defensive front 7 and continue to evolve the offense to keep it effective and fresh. In other words, TT and co need to field the best team they can while maintaining a sustainable foundation for the future and injuries, which is pretty much exactly what's been happening for years. Not sure why I would worry over what SF is doing with a backup QB or an unused 2nd round pick.

IF SF really is the team to beat in the NFC this off-season, based on the lessons of past history, they likely won't get too far in 2013. Lately it seems that being the "team to beat" is the kiss of death.

Isn't there some ungodly high percentage of losing SB teams that don't even make the playoffs the following year?

You know what Woody is a crazy old fuck but you are being a young little bitch. How is it not legit news? I saw this thread and immediately commented about the trade to 49ers fans. They of course are already taking this as a sign they are going back to the big game. Fuck them!!

Pretty easy to understand the factors behind this trade.
John Dorsey had years and years listening to MM mutter to himself, "I left Alex Smith for this?" while watching AR run the team. When Dorsey got the chance, he went after Smith.

Seriously, I wonder if he tapped MM for info on Smith.

Last SB loser to win the big one the next season?

That's kind of amazing when ya think about it.

The Vikings take some of the amazing out of it, but yeah.

EDIT: Good line, swede, but wrong year. Fail.
