  • Assomugha signs with the 49ers for $3million, no guarantees.

IMO this is the steal of this FA season. Before the disaster in Philly, this guy was one of the best CBs in the league. Maybe there's something in the film on him these past two years, but I don't know that he's lost that much. With the SF front 7 in front of him he could have a very good season.

No lie. I've heard that his Oakland success came from always playing the outside receiver on a certain side of the field, so he never had to change position or not have assistance from the sideline. Putting him all over different receivers in Philly exposed some of his flaws (and I'm not a good enough coach nor seen enough film of NA to diagnose).

However, the standard starting CB contracts this offseason have been for ~$5M per year. This isn't even a solid $3. It's $1.65, with the balance in performance incentives. Either NA wanted to get back to the Bay Area, loves the 49ers, wants to make the playoffs, or believes he can earn a much better contract in 2014.

That signing likely means that for sure the 49ers won't be seriouis contenders for D. Revis.

The skinny on that is the Jets may deal D.Revis on draft day to make a huge splash. That would be in keeping with the Jets flare for the dramatic.

How about this move by the Indy Colts. I'm glad he didn't hook up with Detroit. I believe he has potential in the right situation and playing with Andrew Luck and mentored by Reggie Wayne might do the trick:

Here's another FA CB that seeked and didn't find so returns to his former team. DeAngelo Hall will get approximately $2 million in 2013. Much less than the $7.5 million he was scheduled to make in 2013 prior to his release.

            • One thing I wanted to add from deep in the AP's Asomugha article:

"Before his release in Philadelphia on the first day of free agency last month, he had been due to make $15 million this season, including $4 million guaranteed, after signing a $60 million, five-year deal with the Eagles in 2011."

Which shows that "guaranteeed" can mean anything but.

Everything I've seen say that they still have to pay that $4million and it counts against the cap. Eagles signed him to a pretty smart deal, no signing bonus, nothing guaranteed in the last 2 years of the contract.

Yup it's now very rough on NFL CB's. They have an added burden of learning cost cutting measures.
