M3 Interview At NFC Coaches Breakfast

Great interview with local guys and covered about all the questions we've had. M3 gives some good feedback on where they are in preparation for next season. I hope the transcript makes it online because he touched on 15 or so topics, no way to get in all into one or even three stories.

But to give a flavor, he is McCarthy saying the left side of line (plus center) need to play better. He thought Sitton had his finest year and Bulaga/Barclay made a fine right side.

It doesn't sound like Bulaga is moving to the left. At least not immediately.

Highlights from memory:

1. Not final, but Bulaga is staying on Right for now

2. Does not expect to see Nick Collins talent replaced. Not sure Ted is over this or not (not sure if he was joking or not) and called Nick a mid-career HOFer. Burnett needs to hold onto ball. Likes the young safeties.

3. EDS was a step up but not good enough. Had bad stretches.

4. Lang was grouped with left side of line that had bad year. No word on injury.

5. Sherrod. Recovery is more than just two broken bones healing, so there obviously is some soft tissue/nerve damage. He is in weight room. Doesn't seem like there is a timeline.

6. Like D Harris very much. Wishes he had been ready earlier.

7. Defense took too long to acclimate to assignments versus Peterson and 49ers. Needed to be more regimented. Part of 49ers second game prep problem was injuries. They could not rep the work in practice like he would have wanted to. Biggest concern was scrambles. Most surprising was defense being on its heels after every time San Fran sprung a big play.

8. Have already had the A&M visit. M3 said cannot afford to have same player take the dive and pitch every time or offense will adjust.

The whole thing is essentially on Twitter, but combining it will be a nightmare.

In listening to the presser, I thought back to the 9ers running the read option against us. It seemed to me that there is, for football at least, a long hesitation while the QB holds the ball in the RB's gut while he reads the DE or LB. If there was any kind of pressure up the middle, the play would be blown up in the backfield and even result in turnovers. Not to mention, a good way to make the QB want to start dropping back and passing to survive. Pressure up the middle was lacking even before the read option. JMHO

If you watch the CK touchdown on the read-option late in the game (the extra long one past Walden), the blocking scheme doubles down on three lineman away from the playside. By ignoring one DE/OLB, they offense can throw 5 OL and 1 TE at the D line. There isn't much room to run to the blocked off side, but each defender is double teamed and does't get much penetration.
