  • Sam Barrington

Initially when we drafted Barrington I didn't pay much attention as we already had a log jam at ILB. I even speculated that he might be moved to fullback like Korey Hall was. Now that the ILB competition has opened up a lot more, it looks like Barrington will have a decent shot at making the team. Like most LB, he's probably going to be a special teamer for the foreseeable future but we know from too much experience how quickly he could be pressed into action. He's actually a pretty interesting prospect.

    Here are his combine numbers:
    Height: 6007
    Weight: 246
    40 Yrd Dash: 4.83
    20 Yrd Dash: 2.73
    10 Yrd Dash: 1.68
    225 Lb. Bench Reps:
    22
    Vertical Jump: 32 1/2
    Broad Jump: 09'09"

    Proday:
    Height: 6007
    Weight: 246
    40 Yrd Dash: 4.69
    20 Yrd Dash: 2.68
    10 Yrd Dash: 1.60
    Vertical Jump: 37
    Broad Jump: 10'02"
    20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.25
    3-Cone Drill: 7.16

You can see there are some significant improvements there. He's got great size and 10.5" hands. The numbers tell the story of a guy who is quite agile for his size, which often translates to ability to cover and play in space. That 37" vert and 1.60 10 yard dash are exceptional, portraying explosiveness and closing burst.

Here's a highlight video to dissect:

You can see he's got some nasty to his game as well as obvious strength and speed. He's not a burner but does seem to do well in space thanks to really good feet and hips. He likes to play downhill and put his pads in a guys back to break up a pass rather than play the ball. His build is similar to that of AJ Hawk, thick and built to last.

His career stats: 258 tackles, 21.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks, 1 pick six to put away a game vs UTEP, 5 FF

Although his team was always pretty awful, Sam made some notable big plays in big moments, including a huge FF on the goaline against West Virginia. Over his career he's played both inside and outside linebacker showing some versatility. He's had some off-the-field trouble consisting 4 arrests, all for driving without a valid license.

Here's a video of his play vs Florida State:

Some nice plays on 3rd down, and some nice work holding his assignment against the option. Also some plays of EJ Manuel passing all over the place.

Right now this guy looks like a 2-down LB in the NFL but he's just what the doctor ordered on those two downs. His tackling and take-on skills are already fantastic. Taking on OL looks to be a strength of his, he's a good hand-fighter and quickly discards blocks. This makes me think he could be in consideration for backing up the "buck" linebacker spot behind AJ Hawk. He seems to have rare hips for a guy in that mold, hopefully he can develop his cover skills and round out his game. Hopefully he can also get a valid driver's license.

One thing is certain: he will have to change his tackling - at least half those 'tackles' are illegal hits in today's NFL. Other than that there's a lot to like. But like most guys with his pedigree, it will be a challenge just for him to make the final 53, not to mention the active roster. Easily could wind up on the PS.

In that second video he looks like a chicken running around in circles most of the time. Not inspiring.

He's got a few more "pile inspector" moments than you'd like as well. He's certainly a late round pick but he's some stuff that you can't coach.

Good thing Najeh Davenport's no longer on the team.

I agree with Fritz. I watched the first 6 minutes of the game film against the Seminoles and he didn't make a single play. He's also the last one off the line in most snaps.

Sam Barrington. I'm not a big fan, but I hope I'm wrong.

I wonder if Terrell Manning will step up enough to challenge for some of that first and second down playing time. Is he a run stopper?
