  • The CJ Wilson Bandwagon

I'm going to fire this bad boy up, the CJ Wilson Bandwagon.

CJ was first in tackles per snap for the DL last year. He was drafted in the 7th round and forced into action during the Superbowl run because of injuries. He has been on the bubble multiple times yet has come in and worked hard to earn his spot every year.

The beat writers have mentioned that he looks bigger and has come in about 10 pounds heavier this year. He's been reliable at the POA for the line and stays healthy. Now, this year, he is starting to make some plays and getting noticed in the preseason.

McGinn mentioned him at the end of his column (wherein he spends most of the column raising the small/soft spectre for the OL).

Defensive end C.J. Wilson played as well as anyone on defense. He tackled Marshawn Lynch on his first two carries, displayed extraordinary desire chasing down Russell Wilson and fought off guard Paul McQuistan's holding penalty to register a sack.
    Baranczyck also mentions Wilson's play:

A guy quietly having a nice preseason is defensive lineman C.J. Wilson. He was all over the field against the Seahawks.

Take, for example, the fourth play of the game. The Seahawks were moving the ball and faced second-and-9 from their own 45. Wilson stayed low, great pad level, jammed the guy back and tackled Marshawn Lynch for no gain.

When camp started, I thought Wilson looked a little bigger than last year. Not fatter, but stronger. His motor looks good. I don’t know if drafting defensive linemen Datone Jones in the first round and Josh Boyd in the fifth lit a fire under him, but Wilson seems to be pursuing plays away from him better. It’s going to be tough for Jones to knock him out of the starting lineup in the base defense.
These aren't the first comments I've read this preseason about Wilson standing out. He was getting mentioned in TC for noted improvements. As a 7th round developmental prospect, it was not expected that he would burst on the scene and start wrecking opponents. He's now in the 4th year and it seems that he is starting to hit his stride as a quality player for the Packers.

I think CJ is Pickett's Heir apparent. He's one of those guys who's not flashy, doesn't get his name called often, but he's a work horse. You need those guys on your team, they're your life blood. He may loose some playing time this year, but come short distance, there's no doubt in my mind this guy's in there. He's also a quality rotational guy where you're not going to loose any quality when one of your big playmakers comes off the field (except for that big playmaking ability).
    - Once again, adding absolutely nothing to the conversation.

I am in. This piano playing, gospel signing song and dance man has had a fine preseason and someone seems to have lit a fire for his boiler. Now if they would do the same for Marshall Newshouse I would be good.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

It was challenging keeping track of all the Wilsons on the field in that game

Wilson has elevated his game considerably - I now have him in the + column.

Of course Capers will only play each DL 4 snaps/game, but that's another thread, huh??

You can drive the bus. I know you've been consistently claiming that Wilson is better than people think.

I just got it gassed up for ya.

I have been on since he was drafted. He struck me as a high-motor lunch pail guy. but, being essentially gutless, I failed to declare my feelings for CJ. Count me in as the trombone player.

I was on the bandwagon before camp started:

That probably makes him the most complete TE of the group. My only hesitancy with him is if the knee for some reason hasn't and won't fully recover. Wilson is a comfort blanket of sorts. Just a solid, reliable player who doesn't hurt you, and one who started to show a little pass rush.
