It was a big reach. Not quite Tavaris Jackson reach, but still a pretty hefty one.
He was touted by the Vikes as the smartest QB in the draft and was going to be able to pick up the offense right away. They were even saying that he was the best in the class that year. I laughed out loud with that pick knowing they just pissed away their draft.All hail the Ruler of the Meadow!Comment

He'll be back. I honestly expect the Cassell era in MN to last 3 games tops. I also expect the Vikings to be in the market for a new QB this off-season. There are rumblings they have interest in Josh Freeman.
To me they are a classic case of a lot of things going right for them last year (Peterson's season, great OL play, good health, soft schedule, a streak of ok outings by Ponder) and a regression to the mean this year.
It will be interesting to see if the gambles they made this year with Patterson (for a R2, R3, R4, R7) and Rhodes (plus a R7 and R3 for Percy Harvin) pay off. They wheeled-and-dealed like they thought they were closer to a SB than they really are. You look at QBs like Manning, Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and it's not hard to tell that Ponder is not going to lead Minny to a SB. Might make for a pretty solid backup.Comment
