This was my simple take as well; GB puts there first rounders at the spot they project him to start short term for starters. Sherrod did not do well at Guard and was not good enough...or ready to start. Bulaga/Tauscher.....others were. Sherrod disappointed at Guard. GB wants to get their best players on the field at the same time. Sherry was never one of them. So he went back to his projected spot at Tackle and could not win that job either. There is a lot of validity in pb's claim that Sherrod missed some important OTA's and practice time his first year. But his performance is pretty good evidence that he was way behind the eight ball. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it's realistic that he contributes at all this year. Hell at this point I'd take anything out of him next year. Perhaps he turns into a Flanagan....but I'm not holding my breath
TERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

you could also look at the flip side of this. he gave the packers the bird when they needed him badly. could they just say "nope, you had you chance to join us, tough titties"

Because of the lockout Sherrod missed hid rookie camp, OTAs and mini-camps. Then the genius Campen decides to try him at guard and he ain't no guard. I guess he was starting to come around a little right before he broke his leg. IMO guys don't forget how to play in 2 years. He'll be rusty as hell but he's been playing football since he was a kid so this will be like riding a bike. There was a reason he was drafted in the first round. He may not contribute this year - these next few weeks will be his training camp - but if his leg is truly whole again he'll be in the running for a spot on the line in 2014.

I don't begrudge him for signing with Denver and I doubt TT does either. He knows the playbook, coaches and players there. How was he to know Elway would screw him over?

          • Who was Bulaga's competition for backup RT? Was there a player of Newhouse's caliber on the roster, with more game experience and reps in front of him?

If Newhouse had disappeared down a manhole after the start of the season, Sherrod would have backed up both Tackle positions as Bulaga did. Tauscher was also down for the year (2010) when he got injured, giving Bulaga unfettered access to the starting lineup and reps. Both Clifton and Bulaga (2011) returned in season. If they had stayed injured that year, what would have happened?

Every player is responsible to make hay when their opportunity knocks, to mix some metaphors, but that doesn't mean all opportunities are the same. Bulaga had a large season segment (12 starts) to knock out his rookie kinks (plus OTA, rookie camp and minicamp). Sherrod had partial stints in 5 games and no offseason other than a truncated camp.

While Sherrod might not be the player to go to the mat on this particular topic, he is a good demonstration of how valuing experience and previous results can impede the younger players development. And I simply don't believe Bulaga's superiority at Guard* tells us anything about Sherrod at Tackle. Clifton couldn't play guard better than Tauscher but I don't want Tauscher at Left Tackle.

            * This line of reasoning also requires judging Lang and Colledge as roughly equal competition. I actually don't know how to judge that.

            • Back to thread topic --
So they have Jordy, Boykin, possibly Jones coming back, with White and Harper.

I think they are trying to develop competition in the slot b/t White and Harper -- Harper doesn't have the speed/quickness White does, but with his QB background I could see him finding soft spots in zones and using his size/strength to play an Anquan Boldin type of game. Granted, he'd need a lot of coaching to get there, but he's better there than at TE IMO...he's too small to play TE. Also -- with his size and background, maybe they are looking to see if he can play the same role as Cobb: in the slot, out of the backfield, trick plays, etc.

If the duo of Franklin and Hyde can be the KR/PR, maybe someone like Harper can play Ross' role as Cobb's backup.

              • Harper goes 230 and reportedly doesn't run crisp routes. I don't see him as a slot guy. I think he's the answer to losing Jones. White is the answer to losing Cobb. King was probably the preferred answer to losing Cobb initially.

thats what he gets for rejecting us. he had a chance to be on a good team, now he's forced to be on one of the worst

Lost in Finley news today is McCarthy saying Jones' knee was a 2-3 week injury. Sunday is "possible." ...Still, GB will need Boykin again.

James Jones might not be ready this week. McCarthy might have been a tad optimistic last week.

Won't Boykins be the slot guy ? I think he runs crisp patterns and this is a real importont role.....I figured it would be Boykins

I think they'll rotate Nelson, Jones, and Boykin. I don't think any of them are suited for the slot.

Hard to say, though if Jones isn't healthy, then it doesn't matter. But so far in his career, Boykin has been wide and usually the split end (side with just one WR) helping him get single coverage.

                          • He might need a few weeks on the treadmill, but word on the block is that legendary former star WR Taco Wallace, from the 2005 Packers, is still available:

Seriously, I hope Jones can make it back. It would improve the efficiency of the passing game.
