I still don't get the Joyner for Simmons change. Bretsky's right; Joyner was well past his prime when he joined the Packers. Simmons was a raging beast. I don't know if he could cover anyone, or whether he was disciplined in his assignments (probably not), but man, he was better than Joyner.
I did not know Joey Thomas was the asshat; I thought that was Carroll."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

Joey Thomas was an asshat in college as well
Simmons was alright in coverage; certainly better than Joyner. Simmons would blow up the TE and the TE often didn't get a chance to run the route. I wonder if he was out of control off the field......and a borderline guy who they thought might lose it on the field. To me he was what that Packer defense needed and they missed him after they left. I think Reggie White recruited Joyner to GB. At the end of his career he was nothing more than an occasional pass rusher but by the time he got to GB he seemed to have lost that as well. Fritz was never happy with that trade. For some reason I heard whispers...and alwasys thought Holmgren wanted to part ways with Wayne Simmons...just like Infante did with FullwoodTERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

Yeppers Bretsky. I remember being excited for Joyner but he was way past his prime...turned out similarly to the Hardy Nickerson signing years later. Simmons, on the other hand, was kind of a loose cannon but he had some bad-man beasting ability to blow up any TE, had definite pass-rush ability, and could cover a bit.Originally posted by Bretsky View PostJoey Thomas was an asshat in college as well

Am I nuts or do I misremember that Joyner was signed after Simmons was released and then asked to play out of position?
I think the part about him not being a good candidate for a backup was NOT tied directly to an already signed Joyner.Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Joyner was signed in the summer. Simmons was traded during the season, with GB saying they wanted to give Joyner more playing time. I think Simmons was also in his last contract year, and there were differing opinions in the organization about committing significant money to him,Originally posted by pbmax View PostAm I nuts or do I misremember that Joyner was signed after Simmons was released and then asked to play out of position?

While no one’s talking about the specific reason the Texans cut three young players Monday, their former teammates still can’t believe it got to that point.
The players were smoking up at the team hotel.Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Apparently they didn't need two of the guys that badly . . . "but they had an immediate need for Wood last week."
