Cornerback Mike Hawkins, back this week after a bout with tendinitis in his knee, showed why his potential is so intriguing when he intercepted a pass in a defensive red-zone period. The receiver ran an up. Hawkins got a good bump and then accelerated to the ball with a gear that not even many corners possess.

If I had 4.2 speed and was 6'2, I would be just as good as Hawkins. The point is Hawkins hasn't showed any ball skills since he's been here. It doesn't matter how fast you are sometimes, it's about are you good enough to be in the pros. Don't get me wrong, I would love for someone with his size and speed to make the team, but he has to have more than that or he will soon just be wasting a roster spot.

I think he's flashed enough ball skills with some picks from last summer and another one yesterday. It's everything else involved with playing the position he seems to need to develop.

I thought he had good ball skills too. It was his technique that needed work. He's still got a chance. His body is just starting to get NFL ready. If he can manage to keep a spot this year, I think we'll see everything he's got to offer next year when his technique starts to become second nature. He's still thinking too much.

I know he's injury prone, but why else wouldn't you try Hawkins out as a returner. That kind of speed just can't be taught.
