There will be a lot of cap space freed up if Finley and/or Raji aren't brought back, and/or if Williams or others are let go. But, for every player who is released with an active contract, there will be some dead money . Lots of players will nave increases next year to use up much of the cap space gained; Rodgers about $6M, Matthews $4.5M, Burnett almost $2M, Sitton $1M; Lang $2M, Burnett $1.7. That uses up most of what would be gained from letting Finley and Raji walk and releasing Williams.

I will side with Pugger in every post in this thread. The answer is not magically signing a FA. The answer is a new DC, and a healthy OL.

i took all the salary increases into account when i made my post. we have almost 10 million in free cap space right now, that will probably be rolled over to next year just like we always do.

the cap next year will be about 123 million (if it doesn't increase at all). add in the money we didn't use this year, and our adjusted cap will be somewhere around 133 million.

we have 105 million on the books for next season, that is without signing any of our free agents. so we have almost 30 million in free cap space, and thats without even getting rid of dead weight like tramon and his soon to be 10 million dollar cap hit

        i got my info here

Derek Morris signed a 4 year, $11,000,000 contract with the Phoenix Coyotes with an average annual salary of $2,750,000.

college ranks are very week except for one guy, who we might now be able to draft.

there are a handfull of free agents that would be a nice improvement over md jennings/ mcmillian

i don't know if we need to replace burnett too, or just replace the one guy and hope that helps burnett enough for him to become serviceable

NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, EPL, contract breakdowns, yearly salaries, team salary caps and more.

I'm massively biased, but it would be nice for the Pack to draft Ahmad Dixon. He's gotta be an upgrade from Rodney Artmore.

Also, high-round safeties are a risk of early physical breakdown, much like athletic tight ends (although not as extreme).

Ya, Sportrac is pretty good with their numbers, and I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with your earlier post, as far as it goes, but the devil is always in the details.

They have GB with $9.746M cap space right now. That number will continue to go down. For example, it doesn't include Aiyewa's contract, which will drop it another $100k or so. There likely will be other signings before the year is out, so the amount rolled over is likely to be more like$9M or so.

Then, Sportrac's cap # for 2014 includes only 46 contracts. Even if you assume that the remaining 7 spots are filled with rookies at minimum salaries, it will cost $3M. But realistically, it will be more than that when you figure in the 2014 draft class. Datone Jones and Eddie Lacy alone were over $2.0M this year against the cap. So, realistically, those last 7 spots will cost $4-5M against the cap.

GB will have an effective cap # around $132M, assuming the base is $123 again.
Filling the roster will rookies will put them at around $110M. They have to keep a few million every year for contingencies, such as replacing players who go on IR. From a practical viewpoint, they have more like $20M, not $30M to play with, for signing FAs, either their own or others. This is without signing Shields, EDS. Raji, Pickett, James Jones, etc., and without releasing any big contracts.

If they do decide to release some vets, dead money amounts are:

                      T. Williams - $2M (leaving a potential cap saving of about $7.5M)
                      0Brad Jones - $2M (possible cap saving $2.0M)
                      A.J. Hawk - $3.2M (possible cap saving $2.95M)

Tramon Williams is gamin' right now. Charles Woodson and Al Harris proved that CBs can continue to play well well into their mid-30's. Williams is, what, 30?

I wouldn't shed a tear if Jones or Hawk or both are gone next season, though (more likely, Jones; Hawk is untouchable).

Jones is adequate as a nickel LB, but not a starter. Ideally you could find a 3 down MLB and replace Jones or Hawk.

Why is TT so high on Brad Jones?

We're we excited that TT brought him back this year?

His style of play is up and down and flat out he's not that athletic.

                            I like him ... then I don't.

I think it's time to re-assess. Take this time now and the off season and (maybe?) next season to really take stock.

WE need a healthy OL. Time to cut M. Newhouse.

WE need to ensure a backup QB.

Randall Cobb is a huge loss for us. TT needs to sign James Jones.

WE need more out of the TE position.

We need major repairs to our DL. Bye bye B.J. Raji. Thanks Ryan Pickett.

We need more in the middle at LBer. AJ Hawk is trying. Brad Jones?

We need more in our secondary. TT needs to sign Sam Shields pronto. We need more physical back there or more height/size/speed.

                            PACKERS!
