  • How is Spraypaintedhair gonna use everyone??

Okay guys, as Hannibal Lecter said to Agent Starling, "... enthrall me with your acumen"

Capers wants to play the 2-4 on 1st down, 2nd down, 3rd down, 4th down, and 5th down... anything after that, it's a 0-11 chinese fire drill.

So - Daniels and Peppers as the down linemen in the 2-4; D. Jones and Perry on the sideline; and, Hawk and B. Jones making a mess of it at ILB??

Or - Daniels and D. Jones as the down linemen; Perry and Peppers on the sideline; and Hawk and B. Jones making a mess of it at ILB??

Or - D. Jones and Peppers as down linemen; Perry and Daniels on the sideline; and Hawk and B. Jones making a mess of it at ILB??

Or- D. Jones and Perry as down linemen; Daniels and Peppers on the sideline; and Hawk and B. Jones making a mess of it at ILB??

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

On those rare occassions when we do play a 3-4, how does that alignment look?? Raji at NT, Peppers at one DE, D. Jones at the other?? and of course Hawk and B. Jones making a mess of it at ILB??

For Spraypaintedhair, the question becomes, "how can I misuse everyone as much as possible - let me count the ways".

Unless Spraypaintedhair begins to use the front 7 to maximum effect, we're going to be watching a lot of high draft picks, and well paid players twiddling their thumbs on the sidelines.

I assume through all of this that Worthy will either be inactive, or watching from the sideline while holding his helmut.

The Peppers signing simply doesn't make any sense unless he, and all of the other expensive defensive linemen on the roster are put to proper use. I simply don't see that happening with Spraypaintedhair calling the shots.

The Peppers signing is more of the same for me... I like the player, but how the hell is he going to be used?? I asked the same questions about every guy we have in our defensive front - and consistently, Capers has misued everyone.

You guys are all excited with offseason giddiness - but seriously, how is all that talent going to be brought into effective use. There can be no denying that heretofor Capers hasn't been able to use what he has been given to any positive effect - what makes any of you think he'll suddenly get anything figured out with Peppers now onboard.

I don't get this signing at all.

This probably won't quell your fears, and it's probably not that strong of a point, but as head coach, McCarthy has told us already that he plans to dictate the vision of Dom's defense. Now, MM is an offensive guy, but as HC the onus is on him to know what's going on with his team. This is NOT a co-head coach situation.

That doesn't mean that we'll get a great defense out of it, but I do like the prospect of MM keeping Dom on his toes and potentially away from his more frustrating tendencies. Why wasn't he doing this already? Well, he probably trusted Dom with it, until he felt he couldn't anymore. That's respect, I suppose, but I suspect that Dom's lost that benefit from MM.

MM already spoke of some of the changes he'd like to see on defense. Things that they got away from due to injuries: Mike Neal playing too much OLB, being less multiple, seeing less of the playbook, etc... It sounds like even with injuries, he wants Dom using the complexity of the playbook. I hope he really pushes Dom to do that. If you ask me, MM's smartest aspect as a coach is that he does not dumb his complex offense down due to injury (Aaron Rodgers excepted). You're expected to know multiple positions and run the plays that are installed. I don't think Dom has the same philosophy, as McCarthy himself admitted that they dumbed the playbook down after the rash of injuries.

Also, look into the elephant position. We want Nick Perry to play that way more to try and maximize his ability. The same could be true for Peppers, who is even more of a physical freak, even if he's old.

        I'm having a day nightmare:

Julius Peppers playing worse than B J Raji.

Dom Capers has to answer to someone.

It might as well be the "HEAD" ................coach.

I'm in a minority here in what I think MM and dom would LIKE to do. Datone and Peppers at the end and Raji at the nose in BASE downs. Spatter Daniels and Mike Neal in there as inside rushers at times, all the while confusing OL's hopefully.

I think this is M3's point about taller and more athletic DEs. So this could take some of the jumbo 2-4 snaps when you actually think run but want pass rush as well in case they counter. You run it against teams with that tendency who run larger 3 wide packages or two TEs and one back.

But you can also take Neal, Peppers and Perry and play them at OLB to get you the multiple front for pass rushing confusion. Matthews could move and one of Hawk or Jones stays on the field.

In other words, with more 3 down DLineman, you could see the same variety from the 3-4 personnel that you do in 2-4.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

We need to exclusively go to the 2-4.

                2-4 against the run
                2-4 against the pass
                2-4 forever

I dunno. I think Capers is gonna give up the 2-4 and go 1-5 most of the time for the explicit purpose of pissing wist off. He'll put Raji at NT as the only one with his hand in the dirt, while Matthews, Perry/Neal, Peppers, Datone and Hawk/Jones prowl along the front. Should make for some fun chatter on the opposing protection calls between QB/OL/RB.

Of course, after Norv Turner hands the ball 30 times to Peterson, Capers might listen to wist and change his stripes, but I doubt it. #half-sarcasm-half-prophecy

Not sure there is a wrong way to use Peppers. Play him at DE, OLB, MLB, and TE. He's clearly not worried about it, end of the day he'll be bigger, faster, and more powerful than the guys across from him so he's got reason to be confident.

with his number of passes defensed, I say plug him in at safety.

There's a good chance he gets more than Jennings this year.

He's 34 years old, definitely got to manage his snap count.

Beyond that, his strength is pass rush - so design his role to maximize that strength. Yes, he can hold the edge against T's, and he can play the run pretty well, but why waste him doing that?? Capers can throw space eaters out there to play DE in a 3-4 base - Boyd, Worthy, and Guion (now that he's been signed). Let those guys eat up snaps on base downs, and save your pass rushers and play makers for subpackages and passing situations.

Manage his snaps, and keep him healthy and fresh throughout the year.
