At 1:24 you can see a demonstration of bad run defense that has nothing to do with alignment.

Mulumba jumps from his gap (outside edge of either OT or TE) into the gap patrolled by Burnett.

Forte bounces outside, Tramon (I think cannot close fast enough to get a good, slow his down hit to help pursuit and its a touchdown.

Bad run D that has nothing to do with size or alignment. Lack of patience and discipline. The 2-4 works as designed in this case, the Bears try to double both inside to get the clean look at a safety for an off-guard run. Packer LBs are everywhere EXCEPT the end.

Wait a minute, isn't this the run wist tried to use to prove his point the 2-4 was useless? Inside the 5 handoff to Forte against a 2-4? This video is proof the LB screwed up a perfectly good play call.

To be fair to wist, there is also a clip later of 2-4 on the 1 yard line. No end zone shot so its harder to sort out, but they double inside, get a gap and send Forte in. Neither Perry nor Mulumba can converge in time. That one is far more mystifying. Can't see everyone though, so its a bit of a mystery.

As for watching the game itself, one of the most entertaining I've ever seen.

Was with some buddies - one of whom a Chicagoan, a Bears fan - so it was great fun with that interception at the end to seal the deal.

Okay kids, put your thinking caps on...

You're saying that Capers is blameless b/c Mulumba jumped inside the block and gave up the outside, yes??

Now suppose Capers is in the proper alignment for that situation, i.e. in a 3-4, and the Mulumba is the OLB on that side. Does Mulumba jump inside the block in that alignment?? The answer is, 'of course not', b/c there is no "inside" to jump into to; as the DE on side will be fighting to hold the point there. As it was, Mulumba was left alone in space and due to inexperience he jumped inside.

And that brings up the other reason not to be in the 2-4 there - you're putting too much on a completely inexperienced player who hasn't played there at all.

Both of those realities are reasons for Capers to have been in the 3-4, as opposed to the 2-4.

Mulumba shouldn't have jumped inside, but he never should have been put in that position to begin with. He was put in that position by Capers; he was put in that position, and he was not prepared to be put in that position - that is always on the General. Sun Tzu, gentlemen.

Mulumba was developmental depth on a team that had multiple injuries at his position.

There is no aphorism wise enough to stop people from applying it poorly.

Just watched superbowl 40 on NFL network. Every time Pittsburg went into the 2-3 dime (on like 3rd and 4) Seattle shoved it down their throats like a bad porn. Pitt did adjust and stop doing it.

Seemed that they went mostly base from what I could see. Mind you the camera angles didn't always make it easy for me to tell.
