  • Atlanta had to operate on a 4 down territory mentality in the second half, especially since the Packers offense kept moving the target they needed to get to.

It doesn't let the defense off of the hook for their lull, or their lack of coverage on Jones, but it changes the playcalling enough to make it more difficult on the D.

I suppose if ATL ever had a fourth down, or even a third down, your view would make more sense.

      • Anyone else think Shields should not have played. He didn't practice all week and clearly looked lost. He had one nice play - a block on the Burnett INT.

Shields should have stayed in the locker room at half time.

Yeah, those 4th down conversions were hard to watch. I kept thinking this would be a good time for one stop, but nope.

              Answer:

A mess of things. A defense with heads spinning. A defense gassed....worn down by extreme offensive weapons on the Atlanta side.

They were 3/3 on 4th down.

I knew they were perfect on 4th down, but it seemed like they went for it on more 4th downs than just 3.

Seemed like the Packer Defense did pretty good on 1st and 2nd down, then shit the bed on 3rd and/or 4th down.

I know. But the point was that they weren't having to run a ton of fourth down plays. They were getting chunks of yardage almost at will.

Yeah, I know. I was speaking more to their mentality.

It reminded me of the latter half of 2011, when the Packers would build a lead and wind up in a shootout... Chargers game and in-season Giants game come to mind.

Packers held them to a reasonable 5 of 11 on 3rd down. But Falcons were 3 of 3 on fourth down, which makes that 8 possible drives sustained.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

my comment wasn't meant to relay factual information. The 3-3 on fourth down just illustrates the futility of the defense in stopping anything, like all the other plays in the second half.

I am actually surprised more teams, esp. New England, don't try fourth down more against this D.

After watching the second half, I believe he did, actually.

Just wait, especially after last night, and for sure if we make the playoffs.
