I figured they would not tender him, because they could sign him for less than the low tender. Instead, for a two year contract they are paying more than the low tender (but less than the next level up).

Most reports were that he played well at guard last year.

Since they also clearly like Rotheram, upping his salary to keep him last year, are they at least somewhat protected for 2017 in case Sitton and Lang get huge offers and leave?

2M per year is still low-end backup money for a guy not on his rookie contract. The guarantee is low enough that he's just as cutable as any rookie.

One article stated that his (signing bonus) + (workout bonus) + (1st year salary) = low RFA tender amount. If that is true, from a total cash perspective GB is no worse off than if they tendered him, and the 2016 cap amount is actually $300,000 less, but 2017 is $300,000 more.

Hard to see what was in it for Taylor except immediately receiving the bonus rather than having to wait until September for a pay check.

2016 RFA tenders are $1.671 million, $2.553 million, and $3.635 million.

Sortrac and Overthecap are reporting the following for Taylor:

signing bonus - $600,000.
workout bonus 50,000.
2016 salary - $1,100,000.

If true, in 2016 he receives $1,750,000; or roughly $80,000 more than the RFA tender, and $600,000 of it immediately, rather than waiting for September.
On the other hand, I think the full RFA tender is guaranteed immediately upon the player signing. Conceivably, Taylor could receive just the $600,000 bonus of the two year contract.

Not bad. He knows the offense, has played some NFL snaps ok, can backup both RG and LG this year and gives some insurance for the following year, when Sitton and Lang are FA's.
