Why give in to ARods demands? Seriously. He's going to turn 35 in 2018, 36 in 2019. We can exclusive rights franchise him and keep him around for the season he turns 37. What, is he not going to play? Okay, he's already pretty darn old at 37. I bet he could go out and land a fat contract if he wanted still at 37, but if the Packers wanted to go the replacement route, they have a couple years to get a person in the position to be ready.

Is anyone going to hold out the season for 22M and cost themselves more than that in endorsements? No way. It would be a financially ill-advised move for Aaron to sit out.

I don't get it. We have all of the leverage here.

Could this be why they brought in the kid from Cleveland? So he could be ready to start year 4 like 'Rod did?

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Poisoning the well. Also possible he would not show up for work under the tag. He has the leverage to pull that off. Cousins, who had never received big money, did not.

You would also be encouraging him not to play the Rodgers extended offense, which sometimes, against good defenses, is the only offense.

Leverage? If Rodgers doesn't show up until Week 6, no one on staff will be safe. Goodbye McCarthy, goodbye Ball and Gutenkunst.

Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

One top QB has done this and reportedly he regrets it because the help at WR arrived 3 years late.

I'd love to know who else is signing below market deals for the hometown team. Its not up to the player to make this happen.

If he sits out 6 weeks, all the coaching staff needs to do is say he is being a troublemaker and bye-bye ~20M in endorsements in addition to 6 weeks of salary. Would not be a smart move financially if he is made out to be a diva.

FWIW, I don't think they should do this, but this notion that he deserves to constantly be the top paid player, a full guarantee, etc is silly. The Packers have all the leverage right now and his deal is effectively guaranteed anyway.

I don't know where the numbers may end up, but are some suggesting AR should be getting a $200M+ guaranteed contract (for 4 or 5 years)? If that's the case, my answer is no.

That would be a very TT thing to do. TT isn't in charge anymore, and I doubt the new brass has the brass to take that PR hit for "treating ARod bad after all he has done for the franchise".

Incidentally we could franchise him for 2 years and control him through age 38.

Also consider this: The QB franchise tag is $23.189 mil. But ...

Bleacher Report[/URL]"]The exclusive tag amount is pretty simple to calculate. It's either an average of the five largest salaries at the offered players' position at the end of restricted free agency this season, or 120 percent of the offered player's current salary—whichever is greater.
Rodgers salary alone is $20 mil in 2020 (if his likely to be earned bonuses are included, its $21.1 mil). At a minimum (franchise QB number may exceed this in two years) he will earn $24 million in year one of the Franchise tag. In Year 2, he earns $28.8.

That is $52.8 mil in cap space and cash. The team does get year by year protection. But zero help in getting the cap number down.

Why hamstring yourself this way for injury protection when you can give him a longer deal and then bury the acceleration of the signing bonus in later years when the cap is higher.

This tag would be reverse Brady. Or reverse Belichickism if you prefer.

I remember this working out so well with Bert. And that was when they had a viable replacement in hand for the QB position.

If the Packers have all the leverage, why are they negotiating?

                    $40 or $50 mil a year guaranteed?

I have not read that anywhere. More like $30 million per year with most of it guaranteed over the course of a 4 year extension.

If that's the case, than it's probably fair.

Get Rodgers to wed Kate Upton or Jennifer Lawrence. Problem solved.

On one hand, I am dirt poor so I agree with you.

On the other, Aaron has so much money and makes so much already and his future earnings will be tied to his legacy. With that in mind, maybe keeping the salary 8M lower for the next three years to ensure much greater future earnings via a legacy may be a smart gamble on his part. Not sure.

And he will be the highest paid player when he signs his next contact. Just like I think he was when he signed the last. Contracts are constantly increasing, today's highest paid, is three year's from now out of the top 10.
But Rodgers leads the league in frumpy expressions and negative body language on the sideline, which makes him, like Josh Allen, a unique double threat.

Kate would need to divorce Justin Verlander. Who probably has more money than ARod and a much smaller chance of breaking a clavicle.
