Green Bay adds USF WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling to close out the fifth round. He had just 1 dropped pass in 2016 on 43 targets, but saw that number rise to 9 on 97 targets in 2017

No. As mentioned above, each team before the draft puts together their analysis of every other teams’ needs and possible targets, based on their schemes. Like most teams, the Packers try to feed false information into those other teams’ reports—primarily with their pre-draft visits and interviews, which are public information for the rest of the league. It’s to the Packers’ advantage to fool other teams into thinking that they’re looking for a certain player. Maybe a gullible team will jump right in front of them to draft one of those decoys, instead of a wiser team moving into that spot to steal someone they love.

That was the case with Pettis. Good front offices would know that the Packers had no interest. Pettis is thin and soft, and the Packers have never taken a receiver like that in the McCarthy era, at least in the first four rounds. (They’ve always drafted rugged receivers, like Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, James Jones, Ty Montgomery, Randall Cobb, and Greg Jennings, who was thin but tough as nails.) The San Francisco 49ers, however, have the worst front office in the NFL. In early 2017, meddling trust-fund baby owner Jed York scared off good GM candidates like Brian Gutekunst and Elliot Wolf, and wound up settling for the inexperienced John Lynch. If I wanted to actually fact check this, I would have researched it. I just WANT it to be true. So John Lynch can suck it like Matt Millen, Mike Singletary and all the rest of the attitude boys.

To answer your question, I am assuming there was pre draft or pre pick scuttlebutt that the Packers wanted a WR. If he had a hard report, I am sure he would have linked it.

Doubt they would have taken him over Jackson even if he was there, it was obvisouly they were going defense early.

OK before the BULLSHIT gets too heavy in here and the 'COOL AID' Drinkers' over power the sensible (or realistic and objectively viewing it all) Packer fans:

This is what you Cool Aid Drinkers miss. Dam it must be wonderful to one time criticise the Media and then on others suck up to anything positive that's written and based on some alluded to pretense or another and ie the Packers 'Invisible Draft Board. I can clearly and justifiably with REAL MERIT shoot holes in the First, Second and Fourth Moves that Packer GM Brian Gutekunst and his Packer Draft Team made and shouldn't have needed to make in this 2018 NFL Draft.

I can easily after that shoot down most of his other moves in this Draft and to read the Grades given by the NFL Media and Analysts and 'Give Me A Break' A Grades...I beg to differ.

I've come to this conclusion and being a Pro Sports fan since childhood. Since many many moons ago and debating anything and Pro Sports. 'Cool Aid Drinkers' feast on their delusions and are perfectly content to do so, and all the more power to Y'all; but I never have nor will ever be one of you. I'm not wired that way. Many of you give too much credit to Packer GM Brian Gutekunst's moves in Round ONE to get a new CB And acquire an additional 1st Rd. Pick in 2019. He paid a BIG cost in Draft Chart Points to buy that additional First Round Pick next year.He paid in advance for anabout 20th Pick Overall or about 850 Draft Chart Value Points based on the DRAFTTEK Trade Value Chart.

So I placed this after a load of work on another thread and it deserves therefore, because of the extensive analysis, to be right here as well:

This is a comprehensive ANALYSIS of Brian Gutekunst's decision to Trade up for his Third Round Pick at NO. 88.

At the time he made that decision; I was surprised; hoping they would simply call it a day and be 'locked and loaded' for Day Three and the NO. 1 Pick on that day. A whole night to ensure that NO. 101 Overall Pick was the Perfect fit.

If they had 'a Hard On' for LBer Oren Burks, Vanderbilt; maybe some Intel made them think they had to trade into Round Three and grab him, before he was lifted off the Board in Round Three?

Here's the Transaction and results:

Note that the Packers Pic at the TOP of Round Five was OL- GUARD, COLE MADISON- WASHINGTON ST. Prospect Grade
5.39.

So clearly after this analysis I question the Packers GM Brian Gutekunst moving up the board into Round Three and Pick NO. 88. GOOT gave up Picks NO. 101 and 147 to select an OLB Oren Burks Graded well below two other Prospects that he could have acquired.

In my analysis Packer GM Brian Gutekunst made this move too expeditiously. In other words he gave away far too much Pick Value and got much less back as a result.In other words he screwed himself. ... WHY do I make that bold claim !?

In simple Mathematical Terms:

He literally traded two 5.7 Graded Prospects for one less than 5.5 Graded Prospects.

11.4 is > 2X greater than < 5.5. It's simple MATH !

That makes little common sense and in my Final Analysis:

Packer GM Brian Burke 'on paper blew this move and acquisition of OLB Oren Burks.


This is his First NFL DRAFT wearing 'the Packer Big Boy Pants'. He's allowed to screw up.

He'll get over the top too much praise in spite of clear analysis that will make a solid case that 'in fact' the Packers got less than they had right there and available to them. Packer Nation cannot be fooled by Analysts that have bought into the way of the NFL now and collusion and what appears to me as the 'you scratch my back I'll scratch yours 32 Team hand shake.

I'm a former Math Teacher. I worked in Engineering and 'the POWER Industry' for a lot of my Career. Math is all around us. You need to use Math too often to make decisions. Packer GM Brian Gutekunst obviously missed this TRUTH.

What if they wanted a smaller, faster, ex-safety nickel guy for coverage?

Then given your case here for all that is common sense, and not giving up TWO at more Value for 'his one'. Simply allow 'his one' to fall into place at Pick NO. 101.

For all that is reasonable and his 5.46 Graded Prospect Oren Burks; don't surrender a Potential superior 5.7 Graded Prospect at Pick NO. 147 in the Process.

Brian Gutekunst on two occasions and just in Rounds ONE Thru THREE demonstrated inexperience and PANIC in his first DRAFT.

I hope he gives his head a shake and learns from this first 'Wearing the BIG BOY PANTS' experience.

Sadly I'm concerned as Packer GM Brian Gutekunst made over the TOP too many of them this week and the Packer Nation Draft.

Another thing I dislikes and I'm going to follow up on this:

He informed the Media that he on more than a couple of occasions was in contact with CB Prospect Jaire Alexander and basically Jaire Alexander clearly denies that is the TRUTH or is saying that Brian Gutekunst to be kind .... is misinformed by someone (some members) of his hierarchy.

Many would flat out call Packer GM Brian Gutekunst 'a LIER" or a blatant BULL SHITTER.

I think again to be fair we see here another clear example of Brian Gutekunst's inexperience sitting in the REALLY HOT SEAT.

YES.... I would have had a TEAM in place to TRUMP Packer GM Brian Gutekunst's (no CAPS) teams performance in this Draft.
