His start looked a lot like Chicago's - he blew his wad in the first half and then was dominated by a better team.

Rams are a scary team though...

At least as I imagine it, the local media and the populace still have a Lombardi hangover and it lends credence to soft and small, lack of energy explanations. I remember a lot of people who were certain Holmgren and something called a West Coast Offense could not survive a Wisconsin winter.

Is there a similar reason the "know what we/they" were calling stories are popular in Detroit? Goes both ways, I recall the Packers offense was being labeled as predictable by Detroit not too long ago.
I don't of anything specific that ties to the "know what the offense was calling" stories that came out of the Jets game - just the quotes from a couple Jets' players. This got jumped on big because, I think, Detroit fans feel they've been (once again) sold a bill of goods.

When Caldwell got fired after 9 - 7, most Detroit fans were glad. But the reasoning Bob Quinn (the Eskimo) gave was that he felt the team had more talent than their record indicated. By implication, this meant he wanted to find a guy who would get the team's record to match what he apparently thought was its high level of talent. So...get that New England-connection guy, have Patricia sprinkle his tough-guy fairy dust on the team (after the perceived "players' coach" Caldwell), and they'd be in the playoffs.

The team struggled in preseason, but most people are willing to blow that off as, well, preseason. A few oldsters liked that Patricia was working the team so hard physically, though others thought he was trying to hard to prove some point about being in charge. Some sage minds in the press, after the third and last preseason games, suggested that something was rotten in Denmark and Detroit, but since you don't know til the lights go on, well, people were willing to play wait-and-see.

But not only did the Lions lose at home on Monday night against a very beatable team that went 5-11 last year, they looked disorganized. Some people on the radio this morning even used the "q" word for their effort level.

They go on the road next week against San Fran, and they'd better be competitive or the Patricia era could unravel before it ever really begins.

          • I can't remember the last time if ever Stafford looked this bad.

            • It's flat-out panic in Detroit. One newspaper headline: "Patricia in over His Head."

              • Stafford has thrown 3 picks or more in 10 of 126 appearances. That is almost 10% of the games he has played that he is a turnover machine.
But Rodgers leads the league in frumpy expressions and negative body language on the sideline, which makes him, like Josh Allen, a unique double threat.

                • To be fair to Stafford it is 8%.

This man has never lived up to his potential but he was truly dreadful Monday night. Yikes.

For comparison sake, Favre did it 38 times in 302 appearances, and Rodgers has done it 4 times in 150 appearances.

                      • Its weird the Lion's offense well belly up because they kept the OC. I wonder if they brought in new coaches and there is a clash of approaches?
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

                        • Always remember:

Losing comes from disorganization, lack of energy, ego, stupidity and bad play calling

Winning comes from organization, lots of energy, selflessness, smartness and good play calling

There is no luck involved, no tactical adjustments, no asymmetrical research available and the causation never runs the other way. You can also conclude this for any specific time period, even if its been just one possession by one team.

There was this early this summer:

                            https://www.freep.com/story/sports/n...cia/684073002/

A recent article reported many players saying that all they hear are complaints, criticism and insults from the new staff; never encouragement, "atta boys" or anything positive. Might be a short lived regime.

                            • Yet another angle of criticism, and some insight into the offense failure:

The Detroit Lions reportedly have more concerns than just their 0-1 record after Monday's ugly 48-17 loss to the New York Jets at Ford Field.

We must begin by asking it...
                                ..."What is losing?"

                                Losing is a disease...
