I don't know what sort of cut-rate contract they got Ahman to sign after his injury, but it looks to me like he's already outperformed it.

It wasn't just his yards. He was popping dudes on blitz pickup. He was trying to encourage his teammates. And he was finishing runs with both good ball security and punishing blows.

And yeah, his quad was flairing up all last year before the rupture and had been bothering him a lot since mid-season 2004. That he has rehabbed himself to this point is nothing sort of amazing.

I just hope they don't overwork him. Though there doesn't seem to be much else in the stable right now.

Actually, its not cutrate. The more he performs, the more he gets:

A $500,000 signing bonus, a $150,000 roster bonus and a $1.35 million base salary for a $2 million base that is now guaranteed since he was on the opening game roster.

        In addition, he will receive:
$250,000 if he rushes for 750 yards,
        another $500,000 for 950 yards
        another $500,000 for 1,150 yards
        another $500,000 for 1,350 yards
        another $500,000 for 1,550 yards.
He also receives $31,250 for every game he is on the roster ($500,000 for 16 games)

I think it was a fair deal for both the team and Green.

The one bright spot of thee day was Ahman. He does not have the burst of before. Some of the longer runs of his today would have been 50 yarders in 2003. Still he showed he is the starter and I am very happy for him.

Ahman Green's play bodes well; Packers could be competing in quite a few games if he's healthy all year. His homerun burst seems gone, for the moment, he could still have it I hope.

I think the Pack got a great deal. The Edge ran for a little over 1500 yards last year and made $9m. That was pre-salary cap increase money. Best case for Green, if Green runs for 1550 (way too early to say), he'll make $4.75m, according to your numbers, in a year when the salary cap went up around $20m or so.

                Agreed on all positive counts.

Ahman, please take it easy on the home life. They need you, we need you.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Its also a very good deal for Green, in guaranteeing him $2 million just for making the roster after an injury that many feel is career changing and may stop him at anytime.

Green's salary last year was 4.375, and his total cap was 5.625. In 2004 his numbers were 3.6 and 4.9. Green is severely damaged goods at this point, with a lot still to prove (speed, durability, etc.) Green Bay gave him the chance to comeback, prove he is recovered AND make a lot of money doing it. I doubt most teams would have offered more than a minimal contract to him after the injury he had. Green Bay also did not try to take advantage of him and tie him up for a few years, just a single year. If he proves he is back, he can still maybe sign a bigger deal somewhere.

and regardless of your logic, it still doesn't diminish what ahman green did today. he was clearly the best running back on the field.
The RB with the most yards in the game is not neccessarily the best back on the field. A list of Top RB's that didnt break 100yrds but still won...
                    E. James (26-73)
                    D. McAllister (22-90)
                    S. Alexander (19-51)
                    J. Lewis (18-78)
                    W. McGahee (20-70)
                    R. Johnson (28-96)
                    F. Taylor (21-74)

Heres my logic, out of the starting RB's sunday only 6 rushed for at least 100 yards only 2 won. And out of the 4 remaining teams that lost only GB was getting beat with no realistic cance of winning yet they wanted to still run out of the shotgun thinking they would somehow bust a TD each time in time enough to come back.

                    Warrick Dunn ATL 132 W
                    Steven Jackson STL 121 L
                    Willie Parker PIT 115 W
                    Tiki Barber NYG 110 L
                    Ahman Green GB 110 L
                    Tatum Bell DEN 103 L

Say it with me boys and girls. Your coach sucks!
I dont think it was the players fault as much as the Coaching. You just dont keep running the ball when it is obvious that you need to pass for quick points. Every team would have a 100yard rusher if they just kept running the ball when the other team knows that they need to pass to win the game and therefore goes into pass defense.

Bottom line is when the Bears wanted to stop Green they did. Green got yards when the LBs was backed off the line of scrimmage in zone coverage. Dont let Green's ghost stats fool you. But I have to admit he played better than I thought he could coming off that injury. But I bet you that If Gado was ran in those same situations he would yield similiar results.

The Edge is only one example. I'd bet that there are more 1500 yard backs that have made less than Green would in your example than have made more.

Other Rb's 2005 salaries and prorated bonuses (ie "cap value) in order were (in millions):

                          James - $9.1
                          Tomlinson - $8.1
                          Alexander - $6.3
                          Johnson - $6.3
                          Lewis - $5.6
                          Martin - $5.6
                          Barber - $5.1
                          Holmes - $4.7
                          Faulk - $4.0

I know the cap went up this year, but all things considered Green Bay was very fair with Green, in my opinion.
