You know, I do freely and sometimes intentionally humorously vent about how much i hate Jason Spriggs or J’mon Moore. It’s sort of frustration but they don’t hear it so i think of it as funny. I’m still gonna do that cuz it does feel good to let off steam and nobody gets hurt.

But I’ll never boo a guy or post anything on a news site or twitter where his family might see. And I do have a lot more respect for Favre and Rodgers and all the guys who do it year after year.

This definitely makes it more real and easier to empathize with what they go through to stay on the field.

He just spent the better part of two seasons either playing with, getting misdiagnosed with or recovering from a shoulder injury. You have to be kidding me on this. No one, not even Rodgers, took as many hits as this kid did in the early part of his career.

I suspect there is a chance they might be using this as a way to get away from the Colts medical team though. We'll see.

Good point. Have to remember that a lot of team docs are sports ortho guys and they have no experience with ortho trauma which is a whole different category. Sometimes these severe injuries look like trauma and not the basic ligament crap these sports docs normally see. And since the sports weenies have no experience in trauma they can really screw things up. Examples: Kellen Winslow Jrs. non football motorcycle injury. Sherrod getting treated by the KC quack. Examples are legion. Maybe Luck will get connected to a good ortho doc and at least salvage his life.

I would pitch this idea to the next team official you meet. But probably skip the scouting department.

I also think its part of administrative capture. No one above the doc is rooting for them to call Luck done. They all want him healthy and ready as soon as possible. Means every meeting has everyone leaning toward the most optimistic prognosis.

Could be wrong here, this could be just dysfunction from their PR team, but they badly misrepresented his original injury and he kept trying to rehab it the first go around.

            Capt. Andrew Luck @CaptAndrewLuck

            Dearest mother —

The quill has never felt more heavy. I have made the decision to holster my sidearm permanently. I shall battle no more. The decision is difficult, but, as the hogs taught me, I must be true to myself. I am coming home to care for you and the farm.

            — Andrew

Man. Luck. That’s crazy. I will say this is why coachs/scouts ask weird questions during combine interviews and hate guys that are “too smart”

              Ben Muth @FO_wordofmuth
Football is so hard. And if you don’t have to play it & you don’t love it, it’s easy to not play it. I know the Andrew Luck I knew loved ball but that can change with money and time. I’ll never blame someone for retiring early & I’ll never blame a team for trying to feel that out

              Ben Muth @FO_wordofmuth
But being too smart for football is a thing. There’s a point where you can look around realize how much money you have and how dangerous football is and step away. The hardest jobs often require men without a lot of options.

              Ben Muth @FO_wordofmuth
And that probably doesn’t speak super highly of football, or boxing, or the military. But it’s the truth

Seems like a lot of people know exactly what Luck is experiencing. Why these perfectly empathic mind-readers can’t seem to monetize this skill is the real mystery.

I think it's pretty crappy to retire two weeks prior to the season starting. You leave your teammates, coaches, and fans hanging due to your noble retirement cause.

It's tough on the Colts, but I don't think he knew a month ago that it would come to this. At any rate, I think Jacoby Brissett would have been the starter even if Luck had made the decision a little earlier.

Guy is taking a lot of shit for quitting his job. Like he owes something to someone? It’s a job that just happens to pay a shit ton more than most.

If you were at a job that you used to love, but for some reason you lost that love, would you just keep going because you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings? Now imagine you could end up like so many other former players and have dementia at 45.

Sports have become too important to some. They remove the human aspect. It’s supposed to be entertaining.

Physical toll on Andrew Luck through 6 NFL seasons:
» Torn cartilage in 2 ribs
                          » partially torn abdomen
» a lacerated kidney that left him peeing blood
                          » at least 1 concussion
» a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder
                          » and this mysterious calf/ankle
Played behind some bad offensive lines prior to last year. Too bad he had to retire just as the Colts were finally putting a good team around him.

We flat out cut Spriggs. The guy had “living the dream in Green Bay” as the quote on his twitter page. Or something like that. Ouch. Not anymore. The Team quit on Jason. If Luck wasn’t benefiting the colts, that “team” he was supposed to be so loyal to would have cut him in a heart beat. He owed them nothing that way.

Now, when the games are on and your teammates bodies are in danger, you’re a TEAM! When the seasons going and you’re tired and the guy next to you is hurt and you have to go out on the field against guys looking to hurt you, you’re a TEAM! Once you’re in the season and invested as a member, absolutely, your guys are your family and you fight for them. But you’re not trapped there. It’s a choice to stay or go. I respect his decision all of the way.

The Colts also couldn't get this injury straight publicly. They already had two different stories about it. So who knows what is actually wrong with him physically.
