  • Packers sign Jaylon Smith

Packers signed LB Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame.
    2nd round - 34th overall in 2016.

“...was shocked when Dallas released him yesterday...he has lost a step this year apparently but was a pro bowler 2 years ago...Absolutely a Stud. Great pick up.”

Jerry was paying him $7 million but couldn’t trade him.
“he has lost a step this year apparently but was a pro bowler 2 years ago...Absolutely a Stud great signing. Great pick up.” -from a friend.

“Cowpung tried to trade him in the offseason that didnt happen. Then he had wrist surgery which guaranteed his 7.2 mil salary so they kept him to see how it would work out with the young/new guys. They were stuck paying his salary anyways.”

Not sure what to make of this. I'm sure he's an upgrade over Summers. Past that, taking a wait and see approach.

Low risk move... Similar to Campbell signing. I think it is an upgrade overall, as we still have some dead weight at LB.
It's such a GOOD feeling...13 TIME WORLD CHAMPIONS!!

Cutting Th Summers is the obvious move - but now you're cutting into ST mainstays. Does Mr. Smith or will Mr. Smith play ST?

Is an upgrade at backup ILB more important than having your core special teamers? I have no opinion - just wondering.

This year's ST are still a bit shaky on coverage.

I can't see a guy, who everyone says has lost a step, playing effectively on special teams.

Fritz, agree that cutting Summers is the logical move unless they designate Jaire IR for the weeks it takes for recovery and then you have a slot open. Although Summers plays special teams, it's extremely unlikely he gets claimed to an active roster and so low risk for us to cut him and move to practice squad. That said, he did lead the team in special team tackles last year (2020) and so makes an already suspect kick return team possibly that much weaker.

Personally I'd cut a WR (Taylor or St. Brown) as we'd still have five (Adams, Cobb, Lazard, Rodgers and whoever we didn't cut) along with a returning MVS at some point. With four TE's on the roster we should be running more 12 personnel anyways and thus only 2 WR's on any given play.

Doubtful they cut a core ST guy like Summers. More likely somebody like La'Darius Hamilton, if Jaire doesn't go on IR.

Barnes ain’t Wu-Tang; can’t cover worth a lick; average against the run. “J” will be starting in no time.

                            Good acquisition.
