Hard to say if it was skill or luck but it is truly incredible how well this dude has played and how well the offense hums along when he's in there and they're scheming. Lucky or not, they've been very fortunate.

has anyone heard what gutey thought of willis in that draft?

some people had willis as a first rounder

it sure seems like gutry knew what he wanted when he traded for willis

but i'm not so sure they knew he was going to be this good right out of the gate, so theres a bit of luck there

Smart with some luck applied. I can't call them brilliant because they drafted 2 duds, so there's always a luck component, but Willis had 3 camps of work and the biggest reason I say smart is because he played damn good football this spring. They saw a project who had 3 camps to work and built himself into a solid passer. I'm trying to figure out what Tenn saw that made them bail on him.

Luck. Sometimes you are wrong with football players, otherwise it would be easy. I have to give Gutes credit for Campbell, Douglas, all the late round picks etc, but I have to temper it with Quay, Savage and all the early round duds.

It goes back to what I say often, you have to judge the body of work. Gutes has proven to not be so great at first rounders, but his body of work is pretty effing good.

Most QBs drafted when the “2 duds” were drafted are usually duds.
