Jordan Love's Interceptions

First, I will acknowledge Love has been a bit careless with the ball, and the pick-6 by Detroit was a crucial, game-altering play. However, overall, I do not believe his interceptions have been as bad or as impactful as some would have you believe.

Now that the samples are larger, Love's interception total is not as far away from others as some alarmists imply. Love has 10, so do Darnold and Geno Smith. While Smith (342) has 100 more pass attempts than Love (240), Darnold (261) has only 21 more. Goff has just one fewer interception (9) and only one more pass attempt (241). Mayfield and Mahomes also have nine interceptions with 104 and 71 more attempts, respectively.

Cousins, Minshaw and Prescott have two fewer interceptions (8). Prescot has only 46 more attempts, Cousins 93, and Minshaw (who cares!) has 19 fewer attempts than Love.

Six QBs are 3 back, at 7 interceptions. Rodgers has 111 more attempts, Jones 101, the others have either less than 100 more attempts, or actually have even fewer attempts than Love.

So, yes, Love has been careless and should have a couple less interceptions, but he isn't far away from many, many others. He will likely always have more than we came to expect from Rodgers, but he also completes a lot of throws Rodgers would not attempt.

I am very hopeful and see signs that Love is developing into a nice compromise between the overly aggressive and often careless style of Brett Favre, and the ultra-conservative, overly protective style of Aaron Rodgers. One was extreme in throwing interceptions, the other was extreme in avoiding them. Neither of their styles brought the consistent playoff success we wanted (expected) to see from them. I am hopeful the secret lies between their styles.

Awesome post and subject. My concern isn’t with the amount of interceptions he has thrown. Is the timing of them. He does it when there is no reason to press. Favre and Rodgers had shit happen but always seem to be in an effort to come back not when they had the lead.

I don't know, I sort of remember Favre throwing a lot of 1st and 2nd down interceptions in big games, including playoffs. He seemed to throw them anytime, all the time.

Other than the pick-six vs Detroit, I don't recall other interceptions this year that really aggravated me very much. A few bad decisions, but not overly frustrating from a situational perspective. What am I not remembering?

The Rams pick six was pretty frustrating.
The Detroit pick six followed by them getting the ball to start the 2nd half and going up 24-3 early essentially made it ball game Lions.
Both were bad.

Some of his interceptions were fluky, the Melton slip for one. The one where the MIN LB made a great play. The one where Musgrave and Doubs were in same area (Doubs was supposed to run that a little differently but got pushed off his route by the CB).
He's still responsible for making the decisions, and based on those he could be better.
The YOLO ball to Reed in triple coverage vs. the Rams (for example) was not a good decision, and should have been an interception if not an incompletion.

He isn't far from many others, it's true. Goff had FIVE in one game, I don't know if he'll throw 5 the rest of the regular season. Love has to make better decisions and take better care of the ball. Not turning the ball over contributes to being a good QB. He doesn't need to make a play every snap.
That said, the rest of the offense needs to help him out by catching the ball when it hits your hands, and not committing a bunch of stupid penalties. When you keep dropping throws or being stuck at 2nd and 15, your QB is going to press a bit more.

I don't want him to completely dial it back - you have to take your shots - but I don't want him to be careless.

Favre did that 4 teams in his career. One of those times went to 9 games in a row, and one to 10. I think AROD only went to 6

He's forced some throws that didn't make sense for the situation. That's probably not hard to correct. I'd rather he is aggressive than being check down Charlie.

Mahomes is on the same streak, seven games in a row with at least one interception, nine interceptions in his last seven games, his last 225 passing attempts. Streaks happen, both good and bad.

My personal opinion is that Love is careless consistently. Comparing him to Geno Smith and Sam Darnold doesn't improve my confidence. He is what he is. A decent NFL QB. He got overpaid. He isn't top 5 and I doubt he ever will be, but I would like to be wrong on that.

The Rams and Lions picks were atrocious. I mean like you should almost get benched for that. Rookie moves by a 5th year player.

He does seem willing to throw to whoever is open and does scan the field well. He can still improve, but his habit of trying to complete every pass dates to his senior year. He needs to take a sack or throw it away more often to improve.

Part of the Brent issue I had was Red zone picks....both his own and theirs. Love has had a couple bad ones as well. That is where they really hurt. It either takes points off the board or puts them on the opponents board. You simply can't do that and Brent and Love do it way too often.

I have said before that I feel Love plays a similar style as Mahomes. The difference being Mahomes doesn’t fuck up in the most critical moments. He’s been like that since his second year, so Love should be trending the same but not appear to be.
