Josh Jacobs is the best running back in Green Bay since Ahmad Green and John Brockington.
I don't agree with that. He's a nice player and he is consistent and consistently available but he isn't a field shifter the way some guys are. I think they likely overpaid for him but whatevs, they're rolling right now.
He is the first since Green that can actually carry the offense for extended periods and from game to game. A back you can give the ball to again and again to wear down the defense.
Others since Green, such as Jones, have been as good or maybe even better than Jacobs as ballcarriers for individual plays, but didn't have the style or physicality to be more than complementary to the passing game. Jacobs can provide a truly balanced game plan when they want it.
Eddie Lacey could've been that guy, if he hadn't have done whatever he did that messed him up - I guess, to put it in a crude way, if he'd been able to keep his head screwed on straight. He had those attributes. Remember how he used to pull a William Henderson once in a while and jump over guys? Or he could run them over.
But Jacobs, in my opinion, is not, on an individual play basis, better than Aaron Jones (except in a short-yardage situation). But you can ride him, as you said, for extended periods and from game to game.
"The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."
I am very impressed with Jacobs’ production, durability and attitude. I was nervous about the transition from Jones, and Jacobs has exceeded my expectations with ~1450 yds from scrimmage and 13 TDs thru 14 games—really good! Ahman Green remains my favorite though. His 2003 campaign was extraordinary: 2250 yards and 20 TDs. Come on Josh—chase those numbers!!
Jacobs is more steady, Jones is more explosive.
Availability is a skill Jacobs has that Jones doesn't. Two completely different players.
I don't think Jacobs is a home run hitter, but I think he's given the offense a personality and a physical mindset that's been missing for a long time. GB is a team that will now punch back instead of curling up when hit.
He's been a good signing and worth every penny IMO so far. Paying RBs big money isn't smart generally, but this year so many teams have gone with 2 deep safeties and smaller LBs that it makes sense to have a really good RB to punish teams.
I'm hoping they can get an early lead on NO and give him some rest, he's a workhorse back but I also want him fresh for the playoffs.
I was excited about what Marshawn Lloyd could potentially bring as a change of pace back, but at this point it's probably a lost season for him. If not he should have very very fresh legs. Wilson and Brooks are decent depth and competent but nothing special.
I guess the point I was making is he's a great regular season player since he's available and good. Will he be able to match Saquon in big plays in a match-up in the NFCC? Man IDK. Gimme AJO in that game. Games is January are won by players making big plays. Can't do that if you're not playing, and can't do that if you're not a special player. Pros and cons to both.

Since Saquon and Josh Jacobs are never on the field at the same time, this seems like a stupid comparison to me.
They are two different backs, in two different offenses, with two different O lines. Playing against two different defenses.
But Rodgers leads the league in frumpy expressions and negative body language on the sideline, which makes him, like Josh Allen, a unique double threat.

I think Jacobs is faster and shiftier in the open field than he seems when he is still close to the LoS. He has had long runs in his career both rushing and receiving, and he has shown glimpses of that this year.
I was very much interested in Lloyd, too. Maybe next year.

I think Jacobs is a bit more rugged, Barkley is an amazing athlete. Both are very very good, but Saquon was the 2nd pick in the draft for a reason. Johnathan Taylor and Saquon are more alike than Jacobs. I think of Jacobs as a better Joe Mixon.
