  • R.I.P Bob Uecker

    Damn.

I didn't grow up a Brewers fan, but I knew about Uecker long before I moved to Wisconsin. Maybe the last of the really great play by play personalities.

My first exposure to Mr. Uecker was when he was on Mr. Belvedere. Back then I never knew he was a sports personality. Always one of my faves, just enjoyed his demeanor and commentary. RIP to a really cool guy.

Grew up listening to him. He was the best, and could make even a bad game fun.

In 1962 Uecker and Henry Aaron combined for 46 homeruns.

I live kinda close to his house - couple of us are gonna go leave a few things. An absolute treasure and one of the funniest guys around. If you’ve never seen the Norm Macdonald on Howard stern interview - go watch it.

Baseball teams usually have an ex-player on their broadcast teams.

Uke was the best of those announcers and easily the best on the stick.

He was a great color guy and could call a solid ballgame.

Loved by the whole state, he will be missed.

I remember when Uecker played. He was the preferred catcher for Phil Niekro and a couple other nasty knuckleball pitchers who were very prominent and successful at that time. In a moment of seriousness, one-time Uecker was asked why that was, and he said it was because he was comfortable using the huge oversize catchers' mitt they were allowed to use.

What happened to the knuckleball pitchers? The guys who threw it pitch after pitch after pitch? Has the strike zone gotten so small that the knuckleball can't be thrown for strikes? (I digress.)

Phil Niekro. His brother Joe, who had a really good season or two for Detroit. Wilbur Wood. Hoyt Wilhelm. Later, RA Dickey and Charlie Hough, I think.

I watched his MLB Hall of Fame speech again. I was rolling on the floor.
But Rodgers leads the league in frumpy expressions and negative body language on the sideline, which makes him, like Josh Allen, a unique double threat.
