  • ESPN All Quarter Century Team

So, from 2000 thru 2024 the Packers are behind only N.E. and Pittsburgh in total wins. Yet on ESPN's All Quarter Century Team, their 53-man roster includes no Packers. Well....Julius Peppers is on it, but he was really a Panther, and even more a Bear than a Packer.

Vikings had 5, Bears 4 (including Peppers). Even a "real" Lion made it, Calvin Johnson.

Their "practice squad" includes Rodgers and Woodson, no other Packers.

    Interesting......

When you kick ass for 25 years you don't get many top 10 draft picks which tend to make up the team. How many did Pittsburgh and N.E. have? This data doesn't surprise me that much to be honest as we NEVER had an opportunity to draft a Calvin Johnson or Julius Peppers. You didn't link it so I can't glance at it to see the "data"

5 Vikings? Not winning a championship should keep you off, imo.

Five Patriots, six if you include Revis. Two Steelers, three if you include Peterson, plus three other Steelers on the "practice squad". Both have much greater representation than the Packers.

I wasn't surprised by it at all either, which is why I called it "interesting". Other than a couple QBs, what real "stars" have there been in GB the last 25 years? How many All-Pros? Some of the ones who seem like stars to Packer fans haven't lasted long at the top after gaining media prominence (e.g. Bakhtiari) and/or are compared to sure-fire HoF'ers (e.g. Adams).

Maybe they never had a shot at Johnson or Peppers, but they could have had Randy Moss or Alan Faneca instead of Vonnie Holliday. They could have had Steve Hutchinson instead of Jamal Reynolds. All are on the ESPN team. I agree it is difficult when they always draft low in the round, but when they have drafted somewhat higher, they have missed on the pick or had lean years in available "first round talent" (2006). Some of drafting success is just luck.

Don't blame me for your laziness! It was put out by ESPN. Not hard to find if you invest 10 seconds looking for it!

I think Nick Collins was one of those woulda-coulda-shoulda superstars if he hadn't gotten hurt and had to end his career.

Well, no worries - the Packers could place a couple players on the 21st quarter century knucklehead team. I'd nominate Najeh Davenport just for his pooping-in-the-laundry-basket-in-college bit, and maybe Torrance Marshall for having his girlfriend come onto Packerrats to try to talk some sense into us. Cletidus Hunt might get an honorable mention, there. And the defensive lineman, I think it was, who got busted with a bunch of dope in Florida. Was he carrying a gun, too? I don't remember. And Eddie Lacey was just an altogether different kind of dude.

Add Johnny Jolly to the knuckleheads list. He pissed away a Superbowl ring for codeine soda.

Agree, but I didn't start the thread. I know you're mostly joking, but I didn't assert "facts" because I was too lazy to google it ....which is what a lot of people here do.

Whatever you take away from this, it's clear that the Packers could place many players on the Knuckelheads-of-the-Quarter-Century team. But would the ESPN talking heads snub the Packers here, too?

We are one of the winningest franchises over the last 25 years. I don't care if we didn't go 20% winning and have 3 all time players.

edit: and to be honest I'd take prime Rodgers with the defenses Maholmes and Brady have operated with over either of them if I'm being honest. Simply put I think he is the 2nd best QB of his era (Peyton is the G.O.A.T. QB in my book).

I compiled a (surely incomplete) roster of the top Packers at each position. I think you could make the case for Rodgers. It's too bad Nick Collins and David Bakhtiari had their careers end prematurely when they were arguably the best at their positions. Other than them, a lot of really good players, but maybe not the top players.

                        QB: Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers
                        RB: Ahman Green Aaron Jones
                        TE: Bubba Franks, Jermichael Finley
WR: Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams
                        FB: John Kuhn
                        C: Corey Linsley
                        RG: Marco Rivera, TJ Lang
                        LG: Mike Wahle, Josh Sitton
                        RT: Mark Tauscher, Brian Bulaga
                        LT: Chad Clifton, David Bakhtiari
                        DL: Cullen Jenkins, Kenny Clark
EDGE: KGB, Aaron Kampman, Clay Matthews
                        LB: Nick Barnett, AJ Hawk
CB: Al Harris, Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Jaire Alexander
                        S: Nick Collins, Morgan Burnett
                        K: Mason Crosby
                        P: Tim Masthay
                        KR: Randall Cobb

This infuriates me far more than not having the TOP guys in a quarter century team. 2013 redraft and the packers land 3 first rounders, all after the 4th round. Worst of all, 2 of them barely played for us and a layman like me nailed it at the time (if anyone wants to go back and read my drivel). Bahk, no brainer. Top 5 from that draft. Tretter should have been a pro bowl guard for us for however long he played, instead he was a pro bowl center for Cleveland. Hyde should have been a pro bowl S for us, instead he was a pro bowl S for Buffalo.

The TT/Gutes method has nailed the later rounds forever, if only we can actually capitalize on it. Kenny Walker has turned into a player and we probably will lose him for a comp pick. Doubs has proven he can hang if his head holds up, but we drafted 2 WR in day 1/2 this year so he likely is gone. Meanwhile we have neglected CB so bad we had to pay Hobbs and hope he can play outside when he's probably a slot. We drafted a safety high in a weak safety draft only to watch him get outplayed by the guy we took 2 rounds later. At least it looks like we got the LB right (a non premium position to be taking in the top 50).

Bottom line we have done really well by drafting well on day 3. But half the time we are busy trying to replace those guys rather than paying them and filling holes in the draft. Gutes is way to cute for himself at times (like taking Meyers ahead of Humphry.)
