  • Looking like a bad screw-up.....

    2025 off-season, that is.

I think most of us kind of scratched our heads in bewilderment over the Banks and Hobbs signings, and particularly the contracts given them. Neither seemed to have had performances that would justify their new contracts. But, I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the pro-football scouting group and GM. Afterall, this wasn't like college scouting, trying to project performances in the NFL. They had tapes to review of their performances in 4 years of NFL games.

Had each been signed for substantially smaller contracts, I wouldn't have cared so much. But these were substantial commitments to these players.

    Hobbs has been benched.
Banks has graded out as the worst of the Packers preferred starting OL.

    Really Gute?

Banks hasn't been good, but his last 2 games have been his best. I think there's some reason to hope, now that he's healthy, that he'll continue to improve. Hobbs I'm not so sure about. It might be Packers erred in thinking he could play outside. It might be he's still bothered by meniscus he had surgery on earlier this year.

IIRC Hobbes was pretty well regarded as a slot, putting him outside might have been a misjudgment of his skillset. Not like anyone in the NFL has made that mistake before.

I didn't hear about his knee. I had my meniscus cleaned up in 2018. It still flares up and, obviously, I'm not placing the demands on it that Hobbs is.

Far from good, but also far from hopeless.

Banks is trending up, but that's not saying a lot for how badly he stared.

Hobbs is a head scratcher. Even if he is better in the slot, he shouldn't be this bad on the outside. Right?

              Aaron Banks last 3 games:

              My grades:
              +0.10
              +0.00
              +0.35

              PFF grades:
              55.6
              65.5
              69.9
              (average PFF grade is 60.0)

Still opportunity to get better, but the healthier he's been, the better he's played. He's trending in the right direction.

Agree Joe, Banks is trending in the right direction. The problem is we paid him like an all pro and he never was. I "defended" the signing as we needed to get bigger and more physical on the line. The truth though is that I have no idea what they are trying to do along the OL and I'm not sure they do either.

If Jenkins settles in, it can all work out. We need guys healthy and together to gel and become a good line. Its happening slowly as long as Tom doesn't suffer a real setback.

That was the surprising thing to me. I know there are many ways to look at contract values, but any way you look at his puts him among the highest paid guards. That made me expect a lot, because he was handpicked and paid very well to fit into the Packers offense, and that was with having 4 years of NFL performances to grade him on. They could have left Jenkins at guard and found a center. They didn't.

Hobbs didn't get the same generous contract comparatively for his position, but it wasn't just a ho-hum signing either. It came with a lot of expectations.

Banks is due a 9.5M roster bonus the next 2 years due on the 3rd day of the league year (early March). So they do have an out after this year. If they feel they made a huge mistake, they could cut him and save 4.6M on the cap with 20.25M dead cap.

A couple of these posts mentioned that "now that Banks is getting healthier . . . "

And then he got a stinger in the Carolina game and couldn't finish it.

                        So.

Banks was off to the best start he's had before the stinger (See PFF grades in More Banjo) and was replaced by Rhyan who played poorly. That injury really hurt the Packers.

I think I just read that Banks played all of nine snaps before getting hurt. I read it in your post on PFF grades. Not much of a sample size, Joe.

And when you pick a guard in the third round, like the Pack did with Rhyan, you expect a lot more than what you've gotten out of this guy.

The offensive line is not good. They need to improve, and quick.
