"in the mix" is a polite way of saying, we are not entirely pleased with the play at a position and want to see what the new guy can do.
Jennings was "in the mix" also. Now he starts BECAUSE he was better than Ferguson, so saying someone is "in the mix" means they will start IF they show they deserve to start.
Again, and this is my opinion, but I thought the article was one of the better articles written about a move and its potential affect on the team.
