the challenge was obviously whether or not we got the 1st down, rather than just spotting of the ball. So, my question is could we had just challenged the spot only, not the 1st down?

In other words, was it MM's wording on the challenge. Did he say I challenge that we got the 1st down, rather than say I challenge the spot. Can you challenge a spot if a 1st down isn't part in question?

McCarthy cannot challenge the 1st down, only the spot. He did that. They moved the ball back, so he won the challenge.

We were robbed.
