Let's take the 2000 NFL draft for example. Tom Brady was QB at the University of Michigan. He was an average prospect who threw the ball to a superstar WR named David Terrell.
In hindsight we know that Brady wasn't the mediocre QB throwing the ball to the star reciever but that Brady was one of the best QBs the NFL would see in the last 20 years and Terrell was an average reciever catching his perfectly thrown passes.
There's a lesson here. When taking into account the grades of players lets look at the whole picture. Production in football is a product of the team as much as it is a product of one's self. Brett Favre in 05 is a good example. Vernon Davis catching balls from the fairy in Maryland is another. Haloti Ngata taking on 2 or 3 players every time the ball is snapped is another. Hawk is amazing but Carpenter was often able to take advantage of the attention the other team paid to Hawk.
It amazes me how many people can only see 1 thing. They point to the #'s but don't take the time to break down how those #'s got there. There is more to assessing a player than the # of tackles or the # of receptions he gets.
